Well, time-wise that is. The first road going design by Ferdinand Porsche has just been discovered in a shed, and it's powered by an electric motor. It has a top speed of 22 mph and a range of 50 miles. It's an 1898 model year, by the way...

A lot of people probably don't know that battery powered cars were fairly popular in the early days, until much of the nastiness of combustion gas engines was overcome.

Rougher ride usually means more responsive, tighter handling. I hear that they use bags of hay instead of air bags.

According to a documentary I watched a while ago, back in the day when Edison was trying to promote electric lights and electrification for home use, gasoline was a waste product of refining oil into kerosene (which was the primary method of home lighting). They didn't know what to do with the gasoline and dumped tons and tons of it into fields. Eventually, Rockefeller (who was afraid of losing his kerosene profits to electric) saw the potential to use gasoline for internal combustion engines.
