what's it worth? - bazookaman - 02-17-2014

my mom is preparing to sell her MacBook 7,1 to a friend of hers and wanted to know what is a fair price to ask. It's got a 2.4ghz processor with 8gb of RAM and a 250gb hard drive.

Does it have any cracks in the plastics? That is going to make a HUGE difference in value. That model gets cracks at the screen hinge corners and around the ports on the side.

Don't think so. Plus she baby's it.

Will check though.

No cracks? $400 is a resonable price. Cracks? Somewhere between $250 and $350 is reasonable.

This is covered by a silent recall - I've had several of those fixed for free even though there is no mention of it on the web.

$400 - those are great laptops!

So another question. Say she sells this machine to her friend for $400. What is a decent replacement? She ain't rich so a brand new machine is out. OTOH, I don't want to recommend something that's barely an improvement over her "old" machine. Obviously she'll have $400 to put towards whatever she decides on. Or whatever I decide on for her.

She does emailing and surfing of course but she also does some Creative Suite work on it.

Only for 3 years... Most of those models are outside the 3 years now.

What she has sounds fine? She could just add an SSD and get at least few more years out of it.

I agree. SSD = make it feel like new.

$150 for a 240-256 GB -- any brand will work fine.

Wait, the plastic unibody MacBooks are still prone to cracking? Apple never solved this problem?
