Recommend PC Internet protection SW? - Numo - 02-17-2014

The 1 year Trend Micro subscription on my wife's PC is about to expire. All other things being equal, I would renew with them because she hasn't had any problems running it. However, the renewal cost is pretty high.

I decided to look around for a better deal, but was quickly overwhelmed by the quantity of titles available. Even within the same brand, there are multiple versions with cryptic differences in name (Plus, Gold, Total, Family Size, etc.) that are sold at varying price points. Some titles currently have rebates, some don't. Some have 1 year subscriptions, some come with 2 years. I am drowning in too much information to be able to compare.

Naturally, I'd like to get the best bang for my buck. I'd also like to spend less than $30. Is it worth it to pay more for SW with extra capabilities, or is just basic anti-virus protection enough?

I have nothing against free, but is it comprehensive?

Not one single piece of software is a catch all. Two minimum is recommended. BUT Only if they are compatible.

The Microsoft Defender software gets definition updates pretty frequently, but obviously, you have to have software update on for it to check.

We use "Kaspersky" anti-virus software at my office (hundreds of computers). Not sure of the cost.

Yes.

It is essentially the same engine/interface, etc. as MS's enterprise class ForeFront/EndPoint Security that many businesses and institutions run.

Of course, it doesn't have all of the system administration, servers, and backend stuff, but other than that it is basically the same and free.
