Something tells me it's all happening at the Zoo - Kate - 04-27-2014

We had a lovely couple of hours at the San Francisco Zoo this morning.

We liked it so well, we got a membership. I loved that most of the animals were in huge free roaming enclosures.

I took tons of pictures, but

this is my favorite.

I do believe it; I do believe it's true.

Orangutans are skeptical of changes in their cages, and the zookeeper is very fond of rum…

They always look so sad.

I know. That's why I tend to avoid zoos. Some years ago, when the kids were young, we went to the National Zoo in Washington, DC. There in a cage was a large gorilla like the one in Kate's excellent photo. But if anything, he looked even sadder. I thought I should apologize to him for keeping him in a cage, but there was no way to do so.

That's the main reason I loved this zoo so much, I saw no cages ( but we only saw maybe 1/3 to 1/2, it was huge, so we will return). All the animals we saw were in gigantic open spaces roaming around.

This picture was taken with sx50. I was probably 40-50 feet away from him.

I also really enjoyed a space where they had giraffes, zebras and assorted deer all together with many large birds, storks, etc. They had a huge area to roam and seemed to really enjoy each other's company. I especially liked watching the baby giraffe play with they zebras, running around. It reminded me of the scene in Jurassic Park whe they first see the dinosaurs.

I would highly recommend the San Francisco Zoo. I haven't been to a zoo in probably 25 years and we went on a whim, but we're mightily impressed.

The orangutans often try to hide themselves by covering up with a piece of cloth or something.

The primary brachiators such as Gibbons are fun to watch as they go screaming around their cages.

Funny, I was going to say that they always look so human. Not to make this political, but I do think we need to be better caretakers of our planet and our fellow creatures.
