Ink Jet Printer info - RgrF - 04-27-2014
Just had two (2) Canon ink jets give up the ghost at the same time. Can't seem to find any ink jet replacements with both a cassette (paper) and back/top or seperate (envelope) feed. Medium/low volume (less than 2500/mo)
Wireless would be nice but not a deal breaker, lack of access to generic ink (all our needs are simple black) is a deal breaker.
Suggestions welcome.

If all you need is simple black, why are you messing about with inkjets?
Brother has had a line of cheap, friendly, Laser Printers for a while now, and there is a wealth of information about them right here. I have one, a 2270DW, and once initialization was settled, it's been just ducky.
Disclaimer: I have no idea how they work with envelopes, personally. Others can chime in.

Is 2500/mo roughly half letter half envelopes? You could consider to Get 2, one for paper and one for envelopes.

I've yet to find _any_ mainstream printer that handles envelopes well. Even old Laserwriter II series machines with a dedicated envelope cassette did a craptacular job with envelopes. With a laser printer, one of the biggest issues was the heat of the fusing process inadvertently sealing the envelopes. So, an inkjet print is actually a better choice.
The problem is finding a printer that can handle envelopes well. A handful, occasionally, any inkjet printer with an appropriate manual feed will be fine. More than that, though, and printing envelopes directly is more trouble than its worth. In the end, a dedicated label printer may prove to be the more appropriate choice.

I do not have this issue with my Brother laser printer. I had a MFC-7280N (I think that was the model number) and now I have a HL-2280DW and neither of these seals shut the envelopes I use. Makes printing Christmas envelopes fun!

'Haven't had that happen for the last decade or so. I think that modern lasers heat up less than old ones did to fuse the toner to the page.
...I suppose maybe if you live in a swamp or tropical jungle that could still be an issue due to humidity.

Just happened with two different modern lasers including a HP Laserjet P2035N and my parent's Brother HL-2270DW and a HP laserjet 3055 which has been in operation for about six or so years. I've pretty much given up on doing envelopes with laser printers. Another issue is the thickness of envelopes. Again, printers don't handle it all that well. Again, for a handful of envelopes once in a while, definitely doable. A significant number of them, wouldn't consider it. Not anymore.

what brand of envelopes are you using Robert? I think we have some Staples brand (the size that hold a 3-fold letter page) and they work just fine.

I have no experience with either of these printers. However, they could be a decent replacement for your Canon printers. Both the HP and Epson have two separate paper trays, where one of them could be used exclusively for envelopes. The Epson 3540 is also $130 cheaper than the HP 8600 Officejet Pro on Amazon and will take generic inks. If you do some research there is probably also a Laser all-in-one with the same functionality.
