"Newfoundlanders have a whale of a problem on their hands, as fears arise that a dead sea mammal could soon explode on its shore.

The town of Trout River is trying to dispose of a blue whale that washed up on a beach after nine of the endangered animals were found dead in the ice off the province's west coast several weeks ago, CBC News reported.

Town clerk Emily Butler says she's been told that the municipality is responsible for the whale, but she's trying to contact a government agency for help because it can't deal with the 25-metre carcass alone."

In 1937, a short story called "Two's Company" was published by Patrick O'Brian, later to gain fame for his nautical novels. ("Master And Commander", etc.)
What to do with a dead whale?
In the short story, explosives proved to be the solution.
But of course, that was a work of fiction.

In 1970, the Oregon Department of Transportation tried this technique; 44 years later, the result is still a matter of some awe, involving the only known occasion when a large chunk of smelly whale fell from the sky and crushed an Oldsmobile.

Whatever they do in Newfoundland, it will be funny.

There has to be a hundred barrels of oil sitting there right on the beach unexploited ripe for picking.

Looks like a methane explosion will be the probable result, and then a big mess. I'm disappointed that a few marine biologists didn't rush up there right away to do some ACTUAL research as opposed to the Japanese "research", which consists of "I wonder how much money we can get selling this whale meat and oil" ?

They are such amazing animals.. it's a great pity that they suffered such a terrible fate.

Of find out where the other 8 landed and see if someone would like the missing matching piece to their set.
