More Hot... :-( - Buzz - 05-01-2014

Those blasted, blasting Santa Ana's are too blasting hot!
How hot was it?

Aside from the tempermental tower rendering itself unusable after the heat of the day kicked in yesterday, as that heat wore on, it was so hot that two MBP's with respective SSD and regular (albeit 7200RPM) HDD both conked out from heat exhaustion, as well as the backup media HDD connected via USB on the DVR... and the constant drone of the fans is wreaking havoc w/ my tinnitis.

The four devices rendered inoperable due to heat in one day is a new record.

No kidding.

Ovens, yes... kiln, not quite, though it does feel like it sometimes.
Lots of fans to move as much air around as possible, but there's still lots of dead air around here. The computers tend to find the dead air spaces, and/or create their own. The laptops are on podium cooling pads, but I didn't move one of the little fans to blow directly on them, as I was too hot and lazy. Will probably move one today for use in another hour or so. Spousal unit's XP laptop seems to last longer than my Macs, but her laptop is in the highly coveted position under the only ceiling fan in the place.

Im half expecting to see this if I drove up to the front of the place

It could be worse.
It's not also raining and you don't have to look forward to trying to pick 10 laundry baskets of red coffee beans by suppertime.
With some more good fortune the spousal unit is wearing warm weather clothes and is pleasing to the eye and ear.

I wish it would warm up to 70 outside.
Still wearing layers of clothing here.

funny... the building directly behind us (across the alley) is currently tented for pest fumigation.

The Kings come back from down 3-0 for only the fourth time in Stanley Cup Playoff history, and it barely makes the news cycle here in LA. The Lakers coach resigning, Sterling's self-induced racist woes, and who's gonna buy the Clippers from him are higher trending sports headlines. The housing bubble, botched executions, and of course the local wildfires also usurp the great hockey comeback.

This 1960's vintage, uninsulated building was simply not designed for the two or three weeks a year that better design would be greatly appreciated. Pretty sure current building codes would make those weeks more tolerable. XP laptop is now the only safe computer to use till the sun goes down later today... though it may be time to try use the old Pismo as a Mac hot weather buster...

Maybe you should check out a newfangled technology known as "air conditioning":

It's crazy, but it works!

Tempted to go this route...

but have all outlet pipes go in same direction pointing at the back of large Vornado fan to circulate the cool air throughout the room.

We did go through a couple of $200-ish portable Costco swamp coolers several years ago, but even using distilled water, they got pretty funky pretty quickly, and deodorizers only extended their usefulness by a couple of weeks. The bucket cooler looks promising.
