OK, so they are not exactly what our propaganda paints them to be, they are neither Buddhist, nor are they monks, but they are Obama proxies....
As much as the coup regime in Ukraine and its supporters want to project an image of Western moderation, there is a “Dr. Strangelove” element that can’t stop the Nazism from popping up from time to time, like when the Peter Sellers character in the classic movie can’t keep his right arm from making a “Heil Hitler” salute.
This brutal Nazism surfaced again on Friday when right-wing toughs in Odessa attacked an encampment of ethnic Russian protesters driving them into a trade union building which was then set on fire with Molotov cocktails. As the building was engulfed in flames, some people who tried to flee were chased and beaten, while those trapped inside heard the Ukrainian nationalists liken them to black-and-red-striped potato beetles called Colorados, because those colors are used in pro-Russian ribbons.

As the fire worsened, those dying inside were serenaded with the taunting singing of the Ukrainian national anthem. The building also was spray-painted with Swastika-like symbols and graffiti reading “Galician SS,” a reference to the Ukrainian nationalist army that fought alongside the German Nazi SS in World War II, killing Russians on the eastern front.
The death by fire of dozens of people in Odessa recalled a World War II incident in 1944 when elements of a Galician SS police regiment took part in the massacre of the Polish village of Huta Pieniacka, which had been a refuge for Jews and was protected by Russian and Polish partisans. Attacked by a mixed force of Ukrainian police and German soldiers on Feb. 28, hundreds of townspeople were massacred, including many locked in barns that were set ablaze.
The legacy of World War II – especially the bitter fight between Ukrainian nationalists from the west and ethnic Russians from the east seven decades ago – is never far from the surface in Ukrainian politics. One of the heroes celebrated during the Maidan protests in Kiev was Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera, whose name was honored in many banners including one on a podium where Sen. John McCain voiced support for the uprising to oust elected President Viktor Yanukovych, whose political base was in eastern Ukraine.
During World War II, Bandera headed the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists-B, a radical paramilitary movement that sought to transform Ukraine into a racially pure state. OUN-B took part in the expulsion and extermination of thousands of Jews and Poles.

Around a dozen pro-Russian demonstrators rallied in Vienna on Tuesday, as the foreign ministers arrived in the city for a Council of Europe meeting on the recent developments in Ukraine.
Protesters held Russian flags and signs reading "We are against the fascist terror in Ukraine!" and "Ukraine, say no to fascism!". One demonstrator stated that there are innocent people dying, and urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to help and prevent Europe from leaving people "in trouble".

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called on all members of the European Council to take resolute measures to stop ultra-nationalists and abandon double standards. “Russia and many other countries have long been sounding the alarm over condoning attempts to revive the ‘brown plague',” Lavrov said on Tuesday at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the European Council. “Every year at the United Nations General Assembly, a big group of authors proposes a resolution that urges to prevent the heroization of the N@zis and their accomplices. Most of our Western partners have been consecutively refusing to support this resolution, referring to the necessity to respect the freedom of speech. They use the same pretext to block similar resolutions at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE),” the foreign minister noted.
“Now, after the tragedy in Odessa, after desecration of Jewish cemeteries by fascist mobsters, it is no longer possible to hide behind the protection of the freedom of speech,” the Russian minister stressed. “All members of the European Council must take decisive measures to stop ultra-nationalists. There is no justifying those who condone the ideology and practice of fascism. There can be no justification even if they are politicians enjoying the patronage of enlightened Western democracies. It is high time to abandon double standards,” Lavrov noted.
“Just remember that in the heat of February's confrontation in Maidan, NATO defense ministers and the alliance’s secretary general were saying Ukraine’s armed forces must not interfere with the political process, insisting on the army’s neutrality,” he noted. “Now, Brussels and Washington are saying that the Kiev regime’s so-called ‘counter-terrorist operation’ is legitimate, since the state enjoys the monopoly on the use of the army. But the fact that this army has been ordered to fight side by side with neo-N@zis against its own people is beyond comments of representatives of the United States and the European Union," the foreign minister stressed.

I basically agree with this assessment - other than saying that it is Putin's fault. It is partially Putin's fault and he certainly plays a central role, but there are a whole lot of people who are responsible for things getting into the place they are in the Ukraine. There are hotheads all over the place who are more than happy to harm people and destroy things to get their way. Nazi hotheads form one pole and extreme Russian nationalists form the other. Most of the people of the Eastern Ukraine would rather find a way to get along in spite of the cultural differences - which aren't really all that great. But polarization has strongly taken hold - you are for us or against us, our way or the highway. Polarization can gain momentum from violent confrontations - which is exactly what the polarizes want to do anyway.
That polarization is being played out at the local level by actual long term residents of the area. And that local level of polarization is being driven by the interplay of global geo-political dynamics that are always prone to the same danger of polarization. Geo-political polarizations tend to come about because of competition for control of resources by the dominate governing groups within nations. I think competition for energy resources is a big factor in this situation. Ironically, the economics of energy resources seems to create conditions that could limit how far political leaders are willing to let the situation be polarized. Energy producers - like Russia - need the capital that comes from selling their energy resources to energy consumers - like Western Europe - to fulfill their political policies. And, of course, the energy consumers need the energy resources from the energy producers. Perhaps Putin's biggest hat is his chapeau de huile - wearing the crown of a fossil fuel oligarch. How much of a reward does he want and how much is willing to risk to get it?
A game of chicken. Tit-for-tat (that goes back how far in the past?). More and more polarization. Putin could have made choices that would have averted these events. But so could a lot of other people, including a lot of the people in the Ukraine itself.

Russia notes “further degradation of domestic political situation in Ukraine,” Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday. “New evidence was gathered that Kiev authorities lack a desire to launch a real process of deescalation and national reconciliation in Ukraine,” the Russian diplomatic agency noted. “This came down to the incident that lawmakers from the Ukrainian Communist party faction were taken out from the session hall in the Verkhovna Rada on May 6 in debates that concern interests of all Ukrainian people. The Party of Regions faction also left the session hall in solidarity,” the ministry said. “Such actions of the so-called majority in the Verkhovna Rada show that basic foundations of democracy and parliamentarism were blatantly encroached upon,” the ministry noted.
“Probably fearing that Ukrainian citizens and citizens of other countries can learn the truth and can have alternative assessments about current events, Kiev authorities continue manhunt and provocations against journalists, including those from Western countries,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
“We urge de facto Ukrainian leaders again to ponder ways to establish dialogue in society and a constitutional reform which are impossible without stopping combat actions in south-eastern Ukraine,” the Russian diplomatic agency said.
