Republicans take steps to end freedom of the press - Speedy - 05-10-2014 The RNC cheers as it will be able to have Faux News script all the Republican debates. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/10/us/politics/republicans-tighten-grip-on-debates-in-2016-race.html?_r=0 "The Republican National Committee moved Friday to seize control of the presidential primary debates in 2016, another step in a coordinated effort by the party establishment to reshape the nominating process. Committee members overwhelmingly passed a measure that would penalize any presidential candidate who participated in a debate not sanctioned by the national party, by limiting their participation in subsequent committee-sanctioned forums. The move represents the party’s effort to reduce the number of debates and assert control over how they are staged. In making the case for adopting the new rule, party officials repeatedly criticized the moderators and format of the 2012 primary debates, appealing to the suspicions that many Republican activists have about the mainstream news media. “The liberal media doesn’t deserve to be in the driver’s seat,” said the committee’s chairman, Reince Priebus, addressing committee members here at their spring meeting." Re: Republicans take steps to end freedom of the press - Ombligo - 05-10-2014 I wouldn't be surprised if there are no debates at all. Re: Republicans take steps to end freedom of the press - Chakravartin - 05-10-2014 How dare anyone ask non-prescreened questions of a republican presidential candidate! Real Americans only want to know how much their candidates like puppies and hate communism. That's what democracy is all about! Re: Republicans take steps to end freedom of the press - RonT - 05-10-2014 The Republicant Party is chock full of Flag waving, Bible thumping, Paranoid Schizophrenics. Re: Republicans take steps to end freedom of the press - hal - 05-10-2014 I see this as the day that the republican party truly split in two. If they really don't want whacky TPers representing the repubs, the whacky TPers will host their own debates and in some contests, will spin off of the repub party completely. This isn't a freedom of the press issue in my mind. Why should independent press be in charge of the republican debates? I don't see why the repubs shouldn't be allowed to present their message how they see fit. Hasn't something like this already been done of the dem vs repub presidential debates? Haven't the dem/repubs parties taken control of the platform in recent years? Isnt' this pretty much the same thing? Re: Republicans take steps to end freedom of the press - Sam3 - 05-12-2014 It seems to me to be a rebirth of the old cigar-filled back room political machine wheeling and dealing, just updated for today's situation. |
