"Mayo Clinic trial: Massive blast of measles vaccine wipes out cancer" - $tevie - 05-15-2014 Stacy Erholtz was out of conventional treatment options for blood cancer last June when she underwent an experimental trial at the Mayo Clinic that injected her with enough measles vaccine to inoculate 10 million people. The 50-year-old Pequot Lakes mother is now part of medical history. The cancer, which had spread widely through her body, went into complete remission and was undetectable in Erholtz’s body after just one dose of the measles vaccine, which has an uncanny affinity for certain kinds of tumors. Erholtz was one of just two subjects in the experiment and the only one to achieve complete remission. But the experiment provides the “proof of concept” that a single, massive dose of intravenous viral therapy can kill cancer by overwhelming its natural defenses, according to Dr. Stephen Russell, a professor of molecular medicine who spearheaded the research at Mayo. “It’s a landmark,” Russell said in an interview last week. “We’ve known for a long time that we can give a virus intravenously and destroy metastatic cancer in mice. Nobody’s shown that you can do that in people before.” Until now. http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/health/259155541.html?page=1&c=y http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/ Re: "Mayo Clinic trial: Massive blast of measles vaccine wipes out cancer" - freeradical - 05-15-2014 I don't know about this. Maybe. I recently thumbed through a book about rabies, and there was a chapter about the few handful of people who've survived after the virus enters the brain. It's a very short list. One girl was given some sort of highly experimental treatment and she survived. It's been tried on about a 10-15 other people, and a few of them have survived too. But there is still a great deal of controversy over whether this treatment actually cured the patients, or if they were simply lucky and might have beat it anyway. Who knows. I guess the bottom line is that when this cancer treatment gets a real track record, I'll buy it. But it is an interesting story. If it works they live, if not they die - same outcome as they started with. At the very least they won't need to worry about getting measles anytime soon. Need to follow up next month I guess now. 5 years, 6 months, 22 day, 25 minutes cancer free. (not that I am keeping close watch on that. haha) Re: "Mayo Clinic trial: Massive blast of measles vaccine wipes out cancer" - tenders - 05-15-2014 This would not even have been attempted at Miracle Whip Clinic. It binds a vicious poison to a compound that won't let go of the poison unless it bumps into a specific type of tumor cell. Like pulling a pin on a hand grenade it only releases the poison at the location of the cancer. The drug may circulate harmlessly until it encounters it's target. Once released the poison promptly kills he cancer. Side affects so far have been nausea, fatigue and fever. There's another treatment for leukemia that involves bone marrow transplants using white blood cells infected with modified HIV. A coworker's daughter in law was the first west coast trial. She had no detectable trace of cancer after 2-4 days. There's actually an XKCD comic about the treatment.
