A problem with 10.9 and dual displays - RAMd®d - 05-16-2014

I've submitted the following info to Apple's feedback link:

COMPUTERS:
Mac mini Mid 2010, C2D, 16G; Mac mini Late 2013, i7, 8G

DISPLAYS: Apple LED ACD, Dell u2711

OSs:10.6.8, 10.7.5, 10.9.3

Mid 2010 mini connected to two monitors, the LED ACD via miniDisplay Port; the Dell via HDMI > DVI-I adapter.

In OSs 10.6 - 10.7.5, displays operated 2560x1440 and 1920x1280 for the ACD and Dell respectively. GOOD

Moving to Mavericks, 10.9.0 -.3, the ACD continued to operate properly, but the Dell resolution dropped to 1600x1200. BAD. Starting up from any earlier OS restores the 1920x1280 output. GOOD

Connecting the Dell to my Late 2013 mini via HDMI > DVI-I results in the same limited 1600x1200. No adjustments obtain 1920x1280. Mavericks is not allowing the maximum HDMI output. BAD

As Apple doesn't respond to these reports, I'm wondering if there's something I might try on my own.

The goal is to have both monitors operating off of my new mini, which requires Mavericks. As I will be procrastinating in moving everything to the 2013, I've got the ACD connected to the 2010 and the Dell connected to the 2013 via HDMI. The 1600x1200 resolution gives me a stretched image on the Dell.

The u2711 does not work properly with the miniDisplay port. This is a known, documented problem, far more annoying than the resolution issue, so I won't try the mD port with the 2013 until I'm ready for the potential agita. I don't drink, so it may be awhile.

As the Dell has two DVI inputs, I'd like to connect the 2010 to it via HDMI > DVI after the move to the new mini. (The Dell's HDMI input is connected to my Blu-Ray player.)

I don't know if this is a Dell problem or Apple problem. I doubt that I'll get a T-Bolt display to replace the Dell. Maybe I should try connecting the Blu-Ray to the Dell via HDMI > DVI?

Oy vey.

I had a weird problem like that when I went to Mavericks and updated to a 2GB video card in my Mac Pro. When I plugged in my 30in Cinema Display into one of the dual link DVI ports and my 24in Acer into the other, the Acer was fine but the Cinema Display was at like 800x600. So I switched the ports that they were plugged into, and everything seems ok now. Not sure why, as supposedly both ports are the same.

Maybe you could try the advice at http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/106933/mavericks-not-able-to-use-external-display-at-full-resolution ?

You ROCK!

I *thought* I tried that back when I had both monitors connected to my C2D.

Maybe I didn't. Maybe I did, but did it wrong. Maybe a Mavericks update helped. Maybe it is just the time of year. Or maybe it's the time of man. I don't know.

The Opt-Scale thing worked perfectly.

A major annoyance squashed!

Thanks for that!

Seriously.
