PSA: New Top Level Domain Names are available NOW! - The Grim Ninja - 05-28-2014
If you're unaware or if it slipped your mind, new TLDNs are available today. These are like the old familiar .com, .net, .gov, etc. New ones include things like .tattoo, .music, .art, .photo, .computer, and many more. If you’ve tried to get a good .com for yourself and it was taken, maybe one of the new names might work for you.
2014 Top Level Domain Name List
The new names are $25/year. If you’re interested in something, grab it before someone else does.

I'm not sure what problem this is a solution to, but I'm thinking that it's that domain registrars want to sell more domain names in multiple TLD groups.
I wonder if wtf.wtf is taken?

As an example: I have a lot of friends in bands. Often times they pick simple names which have already had the .com registered by another entity. Usually, that's another band that has broken up, an unrelated company, or just someone sitting on the domain to try to profit off it. Now, these friends have a chance to get a .band or .music domain rather than adding unrelated words to try to find an unregistered .com.

having used several of the .net/.biz/.info - it didn't really matter what the tld was. people didn't pay attention and always threw .com on the end.
these are great as a novelty - but would still back it up with a forwarder from a .com.
