OK not really but that's what my wife just paid at the Apple Store. They just swapped out the whole thing. The quote for replacing the screen on my Late '08 MBP= $750 (it came unglued; the screen still works)
Needless to say I'll be gluing or replacing it myself.

Does anyone ever qualify for the depot repair? Nothing I've owned has ever qualified. Same for my dad.

I had my iPod Color replaced for free out of warranty. It's brain died. They did gently suggest I buy AppleCare for it. I also got them to replace the top cover on my sister's 2009 white Unibody MacBook, also out of warranty.
I knew the screen on my MBP would be a long shot but had to try.

Adhesive strips for the MBP screen are easily obtained via eBay or Amazon.

Wait, those $10 adhesive strips is a $750 repair according to Apple? You could buy a whole new used MacBook Pro for $750.

$140 for my iPhone5 screen replacement yesterday from a cellairis.com kiosk at my local mall. Brought it home before I noticed a deep scratch about 3/16" long. They are ordering a new replacement.

You'll never get the screen in as well as they did at the factory. The Apple "Genius" probably had little choice but to replace the whole lid.
