Experimental Ebola Treatment tested on two Americans... may be working. - cbelt3 - 08-04-2014

"CNN) -- Three vials containing an experimental drug stored at subzero temperatures were flown into Liberia last week in a last-ditch effort to save two American missionary workers who had contracted Ebola, according to a source familiar with details of the treatment.
The drug appears to have worked, sources say. Dr. Kent Brantly's and Nancy Writebol's conditions significantly improved after receiving the medication, sources say. Brantly was able to walk into Emory University Hospital in Atlanta after being evacuated to the United States last week, and Writebol is expected to arrive in Atlanta on Tuesday."

Woah. Good call. Now start making that stuff in volume ?

This is most likely the reason why they brought these individuals back to the U.S. - to observe the results of the serum first hand in a controlled environment.

Hooray for science!

"Hooray for science!"

Until the virus "somehow" gets out of the lab.

Then we're all in deeeeeepshiiiiiit. Confusedmiley-shocked003:

Always worth remembering that the plural of "anecdote" is not "data".

It's certainly good that these folks seem to be recovering, but I'd hold judgement on the medication.

True, but every journey begins with a single step. No one is claiming that we've found the cure for Ebola.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but it seems convenient that they just whipped this stuff up as soon as an American was infected.

Sure, but "the fatality rate can be up to 90%" If 2 out of 2 are surviving after being treated, it at least looks promising.

CNN online has the story. It's an experimental mixture of 3 monoclonal antibodies. The company that made it is in San Diego, and has been working on Ebola for some time now. The drug has been tested in a few animals, but never before in humans. It is probably neither preventative nor curative, but presumably gives the body a chance to fight off the infection on its own.

Another CNN article points out that this is the first time that Ebola virus has spread into an urban human population and crossed national boundaries. This is supposed to be an explanation for the size of this outbreak.

I would suspect that national governments will fund the completion of a vaccine against this and related viruses. It may take a while, but eventually it will be offered in the regions most susceptible, and will be used in mass immunizations if there is ever another comparable outbreak.

By the way, the news stories about this drug and about vaccine experiments make clear that the Ebola virus has been brought to this country and has been used in experimental work for quite some time. I don't think that this was any kind of secret. It does, however, show how ignorant and outrageous Donald Trump is, in case you didn't know that before.

Trump ? I blame the hair. He's got some kind of politically weird rat controlling him.. like the Pixar movie.

I just read an article where a dept within the US Army has already pledged funding for more research for this specific treatment.
