iPhone 3GS, keep, sell, or gift to family/friend? - silvarios - 08-05-2014
Friend of mine gave me an iPhone 3GS a few months back. I was pretty excited to receive it on account of never owning an iPhone and even though the 3GS is long in the tooth, still newer hardware than my iPod touches. Fast forward to now. Turns out the 3GS isn't an appreciably better iOS experience than my old iPod touches. Web browsing is passable, whereas anything heavier than Opera mini on the old touches is a bit painful, but media handling is roughly the same for my needs. Since I don't plan on buying new games/apps, the upgrade to iOS 6 isn't as useful as it would be with continued purchasing of such content.
While I could keep the little guy, my Moto G media/mini tablet is a much better device in all ways. As such, do I:
- Keep the 3GS anyway, fully substituting it for a 2nd gen iPod touch
- Sell it for peanuts
- See if some family/friend happens to have a use for it?
I suppose I could attempt all three in reverse order. All thoughts appreciated?

There should be an organization out there that collects older phones for sending to our military over seas.

The 3GS likely isn't a great international phone depending on country stationed. I likely won't do this, but appreciate the thought.

It's the last iPhone to use a normal-sized SIM. I keep mine for international travel.

The phone was purchased for international travel and didn't work in the couple countries it was used. SE Asia I believe. While I understand the sentiment, it isn't perfect as a travel phone.

Check the For Sale and Free Items... there is a member seeking something similar.

That probably means that it isn't unlocked (or it isn't a GSM phone)...easy enough to remedy (the locked part....nothing can be done if its CDMA)..

Give it to a kid who likes old games from the app store.

Agreed. I've used my AT&T unlocked iPhone 3GS in India, the Bahamas, and Europe.
