If they aren't licensed, can't they just be taken down? If the FCC will track down my teenaged brother for too much output on his CB radio, then surely a rogue cell tower can be pulled down in the blink of an eye.

I'm not sure at what height the FCC gets involved. I believe towers under 200' tall do not have to be reported / registered with the FAA. That would just leave local building codes to deal with.

I suspect that there is a less 'sinister' force in action.. these are more than likely local antenna put up by a company that is freelancing or someone didn't know how to configure the settings. I also wonder how those 'home cellular coverage' devices show up on these super top secret phones.

So a company that sells a $3500, supposedly "secure" phone comes out with a story about mysterious antennas that intercept phone calls?

Let me guess, he also said that his phones would not be affected.

These aren't necessarily towers. They could be a cardboard box on top of a tall building, or sitting in someone's attic. They just need an internet connection.

Very creepy.

This is beyond creepy.

I believe this was being discussed recently on the Security Now podcast.

Those towers are just the ones belonging to law enforcement who haven't updated their 'Stingray' equipment recently.
