Apparently, the 12-year-old boy was also thinking about the little girl sitting behind him at Fenway Park.
When an official handed Ryan a foul ball, he immediately turned around and handed it to a young girl behind him. Her mother's jaw dropped and she thanked Ryan for the unexpected act of kindness"

Very kind gesture. Good to know there are still good kids out there.
His motivation may not be too difficult to understand, however: The way the Sox are playing this year, who would WANT to keep one of their balls?
(I say this as a Red Sox fan who is still trying to figure out how we can be so bad this year after being so good last year. This season is almost -- ALMOST -- enough to make a BoSox fan fondly remember the Bobby Valentine era!)

The end of that story is as sweet as the beginning:
(The reporter) presented Ryan with two baseballs - one from each announcer - Remy and Don Orsillo.
"That's called 'paying it forward,'" Striewski told Ryan.
"I saw people do it before," Ryan said. "I thought it was a nice thing and it's good to make people happy."
The Red Sox also gave Ryan a bag of treats, including a bracelet. Ryan gave that to his new friend as well.

Let's see, one kid gives the ball he actually got from the field and the other performs a sleight-of-hand and gives a ball he already had. Easy to guess which one will score the most.
