Dropping from Maverick to Snow Leopard - RgrF - 09-09-2014

Was just gifted with a 2010 era 24" iMac. I'm setting it up to give one of the grandkids. It has a clean Maverick install but, for trouble shooting and restore purposes, I'd prefer installing Snow Leopard.

Is installing 10.6 over 10.9 a problem? Are there hidden files that could cause issues etc?

Don't handcuff them from the beginning--wait a couple weeks and install Yosemite---the future is here!

Don't install 10.6 - it's my favorite OS, but it's time has passed.

HOWEVER, to answer your question, not there are no issues. Just start by wiping the drive clean and installing fresh and there are no problems.

Stick with the clean 10.9 install. Unless they need some 10.6-only software, you'll probably need to upgrade sometime in the future so just do it now and save yourself the annoyance later.

I agree. stay with 10.9 -- 6.8 is/was great in its day -- but its just over. Lots of stuff isnt supported in 6.8 anymore.

Are you sure its from 2010 or a 24" iMac? Last 24" iMacs were early 2009 -- late 2009 went to 21.5" and 27"

Ah, the good old days! 9.2.2, 10.4.11, 10.6.8... Why can't Apple build a stable and robust OS without changing things that don't need changing?

Re: Dropping from Maverick to Snow Leopard - hal - 09-10-2014

I'll take 10.6.8 over 9.2.2 and 10.4.11 ANY DAY.

Hell, there was a lot that I loved about OS 9, but those damn bombs pissed me off. If you told me back then that one day, i'd be able to run my computer for days or even weeks without a single OS crash - hell, without an app crash... I would have sighed and wished that day were already here...

Re: Dropping from Maverick to Snow Leopard - JoeH - 09-10-2014

I didn't get many bombs with OS 9, but then I ran with very few extensions. But OS X definitely has become even more stable as the releases came out over the years since it was first released. I was reminded of that just a couple weeks ago, when I rebooted my MacBook running 10.6.8. The last time I had rebooted it was over 7 months before.
