Going to the redwoods F/U (B/W) - lost in space - 09-10-2014
Following up on this thread: my daughter and I had a great trip. The TED video GeneH posted added a lot of background and showed us that the trees we saw were relatively young and small as redwoods go. And some of these were indeed labelled sequoias, as Speedy mentioned. I saw these groves as a kid, but now I can't begin to convey how it felt to walk among them. The Rockefeller Grove along the Avenue of the Giants was my favorite, not just because of the size of the trees, but because it was so quiet and the forest was not very dense, leaving a fairly open canopy. The easy walk link was very helpful.
Looking out over the Columbia from Hwy 84. It was a perfect day to start a drive to California.
The sun was shining through smoke from the fires around Klamath, more than 100 miles away.
This 30-room motel in Crescent City was built in the 50s from redwood with curly grain. All solid, no veneers. As a woodworker, I was drooling.
More smoke as we drove through the Prairie Creek redwoods.
Some medium-size trees in Prairie Creek Park, and more smoke.
A redwood and some cedars.
This one has some miles on it.
Ferndale was worth the short side trip off Hwy 101. Forgive the crude efforts at perspective correction.

Somewhere along the coast, there used to be Redwood big enough that there is a tunnel through it that you can drive through.

It fell. Might be others. Even in the '60's it was blocked so you couldn't actually drive anything nor even walk through it.

Wow, lost! Thanks for sharing ye trip! I love the way that town, Ferndale looks! My kind of place, as long as they have a shop with GOOD coffee! Oh me… that would be nice. I used to live in San Francisco, really miss it there, northern California...

Nice pictures! I wanted to go to Yosemite last August but, it was on fire. I headed to Crescent City, CA instead and, spent four nights in a campground on the water. The sea lions never stopped baying. Never having seen redwoods or sequoias before, I found it amazing. Well worth the drive!

Very nice. I remember a family trip there in the early 70's. Magical. Sequoia National was also amazing... I mostly remember the Stellar's jay happily stealing my sandwich !
