I am researching using the fireplace hearth for a pellet stove, curious to know if anyone here has done something similar.

as in a pellet stove INSERT? 3 of my 3 drinking buddies here in Western Washington use them as their primary household heating in the winter. They average $1 a day in heating costs.

My buddy has done that in his last two homes.
Works very well.
It's a service provided by the seller, and should be done professionally.
He's got two in his house now,
They do a great job of keeping it warm.

Line The Chimney. Basic casual masonry chimneys cannot handle regular use. Chimney fires are No Fun ... We had one in our house when I was a kid. Fortunately we doused it before it could break into the attic . Looked like rocket exhaust .

yes, insert, since it will be using the existing fireplace. and, yup, the chimney is in good shape but I think building code calls for it to be lined regardless (and it was for the fireplace)

Just remember that they're really space heaters, since it's not going through duct work and traveling to other rooms. And beware that they do require regular cleaning.
We have one, it's a fireplace insert and I'm happy with it. I think of it as a very efficient wood burning stove that burns very tiny logs, and they and you only use as much as you need.

My nephew had a stand-alone pellet stove and took it out (replaced with a standard wood stove). He had a hard time sourcing the pellets for a good price.

I'm surprised someone can heat a home for $1 a day. Most people I know that have them are pushing $3-6 per day with Pellets pushing $5-6 a bag around here.
It takes about a bag of these per day @ $5.49/bag.

My buddy went the opposite route and replaced his wood burning stoves with pellet stoves.
Pellets are readily available and we got tired cutting, storing, and aging wood.
They are space heaters but they put out so much heat that in many situations that can heat a large portion of a home.
He has two to keep the heat low and limit the output to just a couple of rooms per stove.
Cleaning isn't too bad if you do it regularly. And you might want to invest in a stove vacuum rather than a tiny shovel and pail.
