Arby's? - macaroo - 08-19-2006

Reading the post about Burger King brought to mind a discussion I had with my neighbor the other night. I like those Arby roast beef sandwiches and the 5 for $5.99 specials they have on them. Well, my neighbor says that they really don't use roast beef in them as we know what roast beef is. He says they get their meat in a tube as a colloidal solution of who knows what and they microwave this until it magically turns into a product that resembles roast beef.
Is this the true? Does anybody out there know the true story? I keep thinking of the documentary film " Super Size Me " and what it did to the body of the producer when he tried living on McDonald's food for 6 months.

It tastes like Roast Beef and the SAY it is Roast Beast so it HAS TO BE or they would of been sued by now.

Plus I've had nice fatty pieces before and "TUBE LIKE" wouldn't have FAT in it. It's would be HOT DOG like.

I have had some pretty nasty Roast Beef sandwiches before from Arby's.

You should really read the NY Times best-seller: Fast Food Nation.

I put that story into the same category as the KFC growing mutant chicken breasts in vats of growth nutrient story.

I don't doubt it. I've only eaten those things from Arby's a few times and didn't seem like "real" roast beef to me, mostly filler stuff. It's kind of like Boar's Head turkey breast cold cuts vs. a store brand with fillers. There's a weird texture to it.

That was a few years ago. Maybe the beef situation has improved. About the suing...McDonald's used beef tallow in their fries up until the late 80s I believe and didn't change to veg lard until they were sued. Pizza Hut still uses meat in their tomato sauce, so that Veggie Pizza is a bit of a wash.

Having seen this e-mail many times, I was going to post the Snopes link as well.

IOI:

Arby's derived its name, by the way, from the phonetic sound of the initials R.B. However, the "R.B." does not, as many folks conclude, represent "roast beef" but rather "Raffel Brothers," the restaurant equipment business owned and operated by Forrest and Leroy Raffel that was the forerunner to the successful sandwich chain. In its history, Arby's quotes Forrest Raffel as saying, "We came up with Arby's, which stands for R.B., the initials of Raffel Brothers, although I guess customers might think the initials stand for roast beef."

Re: Arby's? - MikeF - 08-19-2006

I worked at an Arby's in the mid-70's and it was real beef. We used to get complaints all the time about gristle (sp?)...

The owner was a real cheapskate -- he didn't want to pay for Arby's officially branded "horsey" sauce which was a mild horseradish sauce, so he substituted real horseradish. People would squeeze out a bunch on their sandwich thinking it was the mild stuff and then get an explosion in their mouth... The place folded 3 months after I started...

I eat them a few thimes a year, they're not too bad. I think around here the special is up to $6.99/5.
The Arby's Sauce is good, I don't care for the Horsey Sauce, maybe it's made from real horses, LOL.

Their ads about real chicken are driving me ravenous. It's real beef too in their sandwiches also. I wish I had one in the neighborhood. I like the horseradish sauce too. Beef and Cheddar yummy.

Do you guys ever go through cravings of junk/fast food? I haven't eaten at Arby's in 6 years but now all this talk makes me want to go eat there.

Their Bacon Beef 'n Cheddar looks great but deadly. How can they even fit four strips of bacon on a sandwich that size? http://www.arbys.com/menu/

Didn't Newt post coupon a while back? Or was that Hardees?
