And that $499 mini is what they did to the $1000 iMac -- its an 11" MBA inside.

And in reality, the $599 mini is NOW $699.

blah. one step forward, two steps back.

At least I don't feel so bad about buying a quad-core i7 mini a few months back (used for $770).

OK, that is what I was thinking, too. I was looking at the specs for the new mini and the old mini, and it looks like the new low end mini is not as good as the old minI, except for the graphics bump.

NEW
1.4GHz Mac mini
Specifications
1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
4GB memory
500GB hard drive1
Intel HD Graphics 5000
OS X Yosemite
$499.00

OLD
2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5/ 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (PC3-12800)/500 GB HD/Intel HD 4000/Thunderbolt, USB 3/802.11n WiFi + Bluetooth 4.0

The thread is about no more quad-core minis.

Apple is picking up on the fact that most people don't need processing power, but they want a mac they can afford.

rjmacs,

My mistake, I saw the i7 and...

Thank you for the correction

Re: No more quad i7 Mac Mini - pdq - 10-16-2014

Huh. Maybe my quad core i7 mini will hold it's value better now. That would be the third time (IIRC) that I got a little boost because of what Apple cut. Most recently, I was surprised that the second-gen AppleTV is worth (somewhat) more than when I bought it (it's jail-breakable, unlike the newer ones); ditto with the stand-alone iSight cameras I bought way back in the day at $150 and sold at over $200.

^This, of course, is the exception, not the rule. Generally, the things I've bought computer-wise over the years drop in value quicker than day-old sushi.
