And of course I didn't buy Applecare for it because... I've NEVER had problems with a desktop Mac. Heckfire... I've got a G4/Sawtooth still running !
Thought it was the OWC (OK, Newer) Ministack. Rebecca at OWC was happily ready to send me an RMA. But I thought... hmm. maybe it's the cable ? Nope... still didn't work. Maybe it's the port on the Ministack ? Nope, both ports don't work. Hmmm.... Happened to have a Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter around. Aaargh. It's the FW800 port on the Mini.
Well, I can limp along with the Thunderbolt port for now. I just hope this isn't a sign of increasing decrepitude.
Off to try Yosemite, now that I have a backup !

Try a SMC reset.
The FW ports on a Mac can be temporarily disabled if there's a surge. If that occurs then a SMC reset will bring them back.

This! The fuses in newer Macs are all self resetting. If the SMC reset doesn't do it, try leaving it unplugged for a while.

I think it's simply a complete power off, i.e. disconnect the FireWire cable, unplug the power to the computer and wait a few minutes.

Pulling the power cord resets the SMC on several Macs, but not all.

Even if you did NOT buy AppleCare at the time you purchased your unit, you'd have nothing to lose by going to an Apple Store and offering to buy it now. Sometimes they'll allow it.
