iMac with Retina Display: Yea or Nay? - particleman - 10-18-2014

I might in the market for a new computer. My iMac is an early 2008 and it is nearing the end of line for OS upgrades

Why should I opt the iMac with Retina Display vs. the standard display version?

I do not sit so close to the monitor that I can see the pixels on my 1920 x 1200 display.

The Retina iMac does not work in Target Display mode. The internal video circuitry is not compatible with the display port. So the prospect of using it with future version of the Mac mini when it comes time to upgrade the computer cannot be planned upon.

Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Dunno. You have $2500 bucks to blow on an all-in-one with a display that's moderately less eye-fatiguing in Yosemite than the $1799 or $1999 models?

That is exactly the question. Other than the being able to revel in the fact that one would have the latest and greatest, I am questioning exactly what the iMac with Retina Display adds. I guess one gets Thunderbolt 2 ports and maybe the Intel Haswell chipset

The price difference is muted a little by the fact that the 1TB Fusion drive is standard on the Retina iMac.

The new iMacs reportedly look amazing.

If you have been getting by with a 2008 imac until now, you clearly are not in need of power - else you would have done something about it a long time ago. You probably aren't wealthy either, else you would have updated your imac out of boredom if nothing else by now.

The conventional 2013 imac will completely knock your socks off. You will be stunned by the enhanced beauty and raw speed compared with the 2008 imac.

The only reason to get the best of the best is if you earn money by the work you do on the imac and are currently spending a lot of time (aka money) waiting for your imac to finish tasks. Or you're bored and wealthy...

The 2012 imac will also be a knockout compared to your imac.

Seems like you need to be under 40, or maybe 30, to appreciate the awesomeness of the retina display. On paper it specs great, but as an old fart that can't tell the laptops and tablets w/ the retina screens as noticeably better than the non-retina wares, I'll sit on the sidelines and drool jealously over those folks that get them... not over the retina iMac; over their eyesight that allows them to see what they have. A non-ret 27" iMac w/ fusion drive and amped up CPU and video is still a $2550 dent in the wallet, which is where my iMac dollars would be targeted. The fully loaded last rev 21.5" iMac I oversee is more than ample in performance, and really only lacks in size. The Retina 5K is probably gonna do pretty well.

Because the iMac with Retina Display is awesome?

Because the iMac with Retina Display is awesome?

That would be my pick.

As someone who hasn't seen 30 or 40 for a good many years, I can and do appreciate the Retina display on my iPhones and iPads.

I have no doubt I'll be able to enjoy the extra pixel goodness of the new iMac.
