Cheap, stable router? - mattkime - 08-21-2006 I'm router shopping. A friend of mine is getting cable internet installed. I want to find something that is simple and works....and is cheap. My Linksys WRT45GL has been rock solid. At $50 its looking like a good deal despite all the bells and whistles. Less bell, less whistle, less cost...any ideas? Re: Cheap, stable router? - tuqqer - 08-21-2006 I'm looking, too. My two Linksys WRTg have gone out multiple times each day since about 3 months after installing them. Power cycling them fixes the problem, but it's getting really old. I'm looking for deals throughout this week. I'll post back if I find something. Re: Cheap, stable router? - ztirffritz - 08-21-2006 tuqqer, have you updated the firmware on them? Re: Cheap, stable router? - mattkime - 08-21-2006 i've also heard that the GL series is much more stable than the plain "g" also...you can install dd-wrt on them - http://www.dd-wrt.com - if its firmware thats the problem, linux may solve it. its fairly easy to install. Re: Cheap, stable router? - dbow - 08-21-2006 My D-Link 524 has been rock solid, I think I got it for $18 after rebate. Re: Cheap, stable router? - elmo3 - 08-21-2006 If you can find an Airport Extreme, go for it. It's the most rock-solid piece you can imagine. Re: Cheap, stable router? - tuqqer - 08-21-2006 [quote ztirffritz]tuqqer, have you updated the firmware on them? I'm not sure. I've never done it before. When I go into the "DD-WRT Control Panel", it says: Firmware: DD-WRT v23 How do I check to see if this is the appropriate firmware? Also, is there a method for backing up, in the case a new firmware install breaks the connection. Our connection is pretty complex, involved a 2-mile wireless over 3 houses and 5 routers. I think I may be better off finding someone in the Boulder/Denver area to take a look at this. Re: Cheap, stable router? - jdc - 08-21-2006 several netgear 814s here, no issues. even comes with an OS X install CD |
