Rotate avi video - Elfboy - 08-21-2006 I've used QT Pro to rotate some avi movies but I noticed frames being dropped (and confirmed this in the Movie Info window). Is there a simple utility for rotating avi's? ![]() Re: Rotate avi video - RevKev - 08-21-2006 Do you have iMovie? http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14159 Re: Rotate avi video - D-Rod - 08-21-2006 The simplest is turning the monitor 90 degrees.:-) (Sorry) Re: Rotate avi video - Elfboy - 08-21-2006 Yes, I have iMovie HD (5.0.2) I'll give it a shot and post back... Re: Rotate avi video - Elfboy - 08-21-2006 OK, I finally got it (the first link downloads the wrong plug-in). I was hoping for a simpler/quicker solution. It takes a while to import the clips, rotate with the plug-in and export them back out. It IS however a cool plug-in to have on hand, so thanks for that! I think I figured out why QuickTime plays it at a slower frame rate when it is rotated. QT keeps the original file and rotates "on the fly". That would explain the drop in frame rate and also why you can click on the "reset" button to get back to the original (sideways) video. Still hoping there is a utility to rotate "permanently" (seems like a fairly simple algorithm...) Still hoping there is a utility to rotate "permanently" (seems like a fairly simple algorithm...) I think in QT Pro, you are doing a save as, which just creates a refference file. Save it as a self-contained new file. (SAVE, not SAVE AS) It will be the same size as the original file. the refference file is probably just a few hundred k. Re: Rotate avi video - Elfboy - 08-21-2006 Thanks, Racer X, but I saved a self-contained .mov (both files are 30 MB). Strange thing is that even the .mov plays fine if you reset to "un-rotated" (Properties|Visual Settings|Reset) Re: Rotate avi video - Racer X - 08-21-2006 then something odd is going on. The real, honest to goodness rotated file, when done as a "save" and not as a save as, is a totally new self contained file, and thus a "reset" should do absolutely nothing, as its current state is the only state associated with that file. Re: Rotate avi video - Elfboy - 08-21-2006 Racer, have you tried it (with an .avi)? I just did another one to make sure: -Opened an .avi video -Rotated under Properties/Visual Settings -Saved (self-contained) The reset button is still available and does indeed turn it back sideways (also note that the "Scaled Size" says 480 x 640 (the "Normal Size" says 640 x 480). Further info: The FPS is 30. On the orginal unrotated video the Playing FPS is also 30. On the rotated version it is about 15. Re: Rotate avi video - Elfboy - 08-21-2006 My guess is that most filters that actually rotate the video require a codec and would result in quality loss. |
