Schadenfreude : My late inlaws house has new owners - cbelt3 - 11-24-2014

Mrs. cbelt3 shed some tears when we said 'goodbye' to the house. The last thing I did was ask her to stand in a specific spot in the house and look at me. She didn't understand, until I said "You were sitting in that exact spot 34 and a half years ago when I first met you. And fell in love with you at that second."

I got that exact shy smile.

Yesterday the new buyers sent this message after I told them that all the garden tools and appliances that were left in the house were all theirs.

"AWESOME! !!!! So many cool little treasures!!!! We LOVE the house and the land and we will take great care of everything and bring it back to life :-D "

And that's exactly what we want to happen. Three little boys stomping around in the woods, having a great time, and their parents making a house back into a home.

After spending 34 years helping to take care of the house, fixing what broke, doing landscaping, and then finally preparing it for sale, I feel that it was worth it. Because a new family will love it just as much as we did.

How come I never meet the love of the life inside my house?

I'm glad to hear the new owners are enjoying the house, but I am not sure how this is Schadenfreude.

Schadenfreude is pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others.[1] This word is taken from German and literally means 'harm-joy.' It is the feeling of joy or pleasure when one sees another fail or suffer misfortune. It is also borrowed by some other languages.

I wouldn't call it schadenfreude (pleasure derived by someone from another person's misfortune.), but I'm glad everything is working out all 'round!

Despite the misunderstanding of Schadenfreude (and of Black's intentions of finding "her") that's a great story cbelt3! Did it surprise your wife that you remembered where you met and the impression she left you that day?

Er, yeah.... what about that "Schadenfreude?" Implies you're enjoying watching them discover all the problems the house has....

Nice post, cbelt3. Thanks. I think there's a song in that, somehow.

And yes, Schadenfreude is the wrong word. Is there a word for pleasure in the happiness of others?
