how long does apple hardware test take 2 run or where is my airport? - robfilms - 12-01-2014

how long does apple hardware test take 2 run?

it seems like for-ever!

i'm testing a 2010 imac i7 2/12gig ram

the airport in the imac "disappeared" months ago.

i have been living off being tethered to a ethernet cable.

i have tried re-setting by:

airport off
applications->library->preferences->system config-preferences.plist
trash preferences.plist
re-boot.

unfortunately, the airport in the imac was not "found".

(i see the airport listed under "about this mac" so i know it is there.)

somehow when i was screwing around with network preferences/set-up, i managed to disable to
he airport and i could never get it back working.

what a hassle.

so i decided to run the apple hardware test (hold down "d" when re-booting) but the darn thing is going on for a really long time.

so, anyone with experience using aht?

thanks in advance.

be well.

12GB RAM could take 20 minutes.

...Did you click the plus (+) icon in your network settings to try and add the WiFi interface back?

Did you opt to run the extended tests? That'll take a lot longer.

Re: how long does apple hardware test take 2 run or...where is my airport? - robfilms - 12-01-2014

yes. i did run extended test and just completed.

and no reported problems.

yeah!

i guess, except where is my imac airport and why can't i access it?

this was noted in "about this mac":

so if the "about this mac" can see the darn this , i imagine it exists.

so where the heck is it?

and what does status: not associated mean?

any and all thoughts are appreciated.

ymmv

be well.

when i went to network preferences, the airport was added to the left. it was "on" but amber not green.

when i highlighted the amber airport and ask to join the same network my laptop can find, it offers no networks. it just searches and searches until "timed out" appears.

anyone knows what gives?

how much do the good folks at the apple store genius bar charge to fix a 3.5yr old 27" i7 imac?

ymmv

Did you have your iMac open for a drive replacement or somesuch?

'Cause the description of the symptom would ordinarily indicate that you've ripped the antenna out.

'Might not be a busted/yanked antenna cable... But the symptom very much resembles it. The device shows up in the System Information (Profiler) panel, but no WiFi networks show up...

How's your laptop's WiFi reception near the iMac?

'Sure you're not using a hidden SSID on the WiFi network?

Got an alternate boot drive to start up from? (Not a clone as that would inherit the problems from the old system.) Maybe start your laptop (MacBook Pro?) in target mode and see if you can boot the iMac from it, just to see whether WiFi networks start showing up in the Airport menu under the other OS.

mbp has no trouble picking up wifi reception.

neither do any of the other three machines in the household.

as for target mode on the mbp and re-booting on the imac, i don't know how to do that.

let me read up and see if that is an option.

one of the reasons i was hoping to update the 10.6.8 os on the imac to yosemite was to re-set the airport.

again, thanks for adding to the conversation.

be well.
