arg, macbookpro troubles - davemchine - 08-23-2006 Last night I was using ichat to video chat with my brother. We decided to try out Big Bang board games which allow you to play checkers or tic-tac-toe over the internet. The tic-tac-toe game would never let us connect and then ichat crashed. So here's my problem: Whenever I try to start ichat now it just hangs forever. I've tried repairing permissions and I've tried restarting from cd to repair the drive. I've also throwing away all of the ichat preferences and restarting the program. It won't even let me finish typing in my new preferences and it freezes up. But the problems don't end there! My mail keeps checking for new mail forever and I can't view anything. Obviously something is really wrong. So what do I do next? DiskWarrior? Dave Re: arg, macbookpro troubles - ztirffritz - 08-23-2006 When you figure it out let me know. My wife's iBook is doing many of the same things. I finally gutted her email and started over. Now I'm trying to get her Safari bookmarks back and iChat will be next. Re: arg, macbookpro troubles - davemchine - 08-23-2006 Adium won't even start. It tries and then crashes. Something nasty is wrong. Dave Re: arg, macbookpro troubles - Silencio - 08-23-2006 Connecting wirelessly or over ethernet? Re: arg, macbookpro troubles - davemchine - 08-23-2006 Well, you can't run DW on an intel mac so that's out. As is running DW on a G4 with the mbp in target mode, DW can't see the drive. And starting in single user mode to run fsck didn't help at all. I think I'm left with one of two options. 1) if it's a corrupt file i can reinstall the OS and retain my settings. But what if the corrupt file is one that gets saved? 2) I can reformat and reinstall Any other thoughts? Re: arg, macbookpro troubles - ztirffritz - 08-23-2006 You're about where I'm at... Re: arg, macbookpro troubles - davemchine - 08-24-2006 Currently doing a CCC copy to a firewire drive. Will be reinstalling shortly... Dave Re: arg, macbookpro troubles - davemchine - 08-24-2006 Formatting and reinstalling now... Re: arg, macbookpro troubles - davemchine - 08-25-2006 Ok, that was not the solution. The same problem exists. So it's not a hard drive issue, it's a corrupt file issue somewhere. Something common between Mail, adium and ichat. Now adium and ichat I can see, but Mail? What would be common between them? Dave Re: arg, macbookpro troubles - davemchine - 08-25-2006 Ok, if I'm doing things correctly this is the list of common files: /System/Library/CoreServices/CharacterSets/CFUnicodeData-B.mapping /System/Library/CoreServices/CharacterSets/CFCharacterSetBitmaps.bitmap /usr/share/icu/icudt32b.dat /usr/lib/dyld /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CoreText.framework/Versions/A/CoreText /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/ATS.framework/Versions/A/ATS /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Versions/A/CoreGraphics /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreFoundation.framework/Versions/A/CoreFoundation /usr/lib/libicucore.A.dylib /usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CarbonCore.framework/Versions/A/CarbonCore /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/OSServices.framework/Versions/A/OSServices /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security /System/Library/Frameworks/SystemConfiguration.framework/Versions/A/SystemConfiguration /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/DesktopServicesPriv /System/Library/Frameworks/Foundation.framework/Versions/C/Foundation obj=0x02c2e5b0 obj=0x02da8c98 |
