Want to play music from my MBP through my stereo wirelessly - Apple AirTunes my only option? - Jerry® - 08-23-2006 Is Apple AirTunes the best option for this? Or is there something less expensive? etc. Thanks! Jerry Re: Want to play music from my MBP through my stereo wirelessly - Apple AirTunes my only option? - blusubaru - 08-23-2006 If you're wanting to stay completely wireless, it's the easiest solution. Otherwise there are several other things that, with a seperate transmitter and receiver, will allow you to do the same thing. But those usually require a powersource other than what your Mac can provide. So does Airtunes--it plugs into the wall, right? Airtunes is prob. the simplest/fewest parts approach, but IF there's already a wireless router in the house with the stereo, Airtunes is not the best/cheapest choice (IMO). The ROKU Soundbridge is pretty nice, and allows browsing of song titles on the device, but you could do that browsing on the 'Book. If the laptop has Bluetooth, I'd consider a straight bluetooth adapter for the stereo (Logitech makes one, I think). Re: Want to play music from my MBP through my stereo wirelessly - Apple AirTunes my only option? - RAMd®d - 08-23-2006 So does Airtunes--it plugs into the wall, right? blu is probably referring to the Mac end of the equation. It has to transmit the signal somehow. Unless there is a BT or Wi-Fi solution, an external transmitter is needed at the Mac. My original iTrip does this very well, no additional power needed. But it's an FM signal so there is noticeable compression compared to Wi-Fi or BT. Re: Want to play music from my MBP through my stereo wirelessly - Apple AirTunes my only option? - michaelb - 08-23-2006 I was hoping someone would have a good cheap solution. I had an airport express but took it back, since it didn't do the networking stuff I needed at the time. But it did stream audio wirelessly and that was pretty cool, particularly the ability to select speakers in itunes. I would still like to be able to do that myself. But the cost (120 or so) puts me off. My stereo is only about 15 feet away, so I string RCA cable as the cheap, $5 hack. At that price, you are almost all the way to just getting an ipod and sticking it in a dock next to the stereo with a remote (if you have an ipod, the dock and remote are cheaper actually), and using that for tunes instead of the MBP. No, I remember that limitation, but it affects less than 2% of my music. Still, the 'Book is your best controller, I would think (supports all iTunes-related material, no?) so I renew my vote for broadcasting via Bluetooth straight to the stereo. Re: Want to play music from my MBP through my stereo wirelessly - Apple AirTunes my only option? - Psurfer - 08-24-2006 How far would a USB bluetooth adptr send a signal from 'book to stereo? -Will it be picked up through an interior wall or does it more or less need line-of-sight? Anyone here using this arrangement? Any model recommendations? I asked this thread's question before, as regards listening to the Pandora music site (-check it out if you haven't). Re: Want to play music from my MBP through my stereo wirelessly - Apple AirTunes my only option? - blusubaru - 08-24-2006 BT is not nearly as good as wifi for transmitting music. I have a pair of bluetooth headphones for my iPod and I can get maybe 30' when I'm not line of site and it's not good quality. It gets even worse going through walls. jimbrady, yes, I was referring to a powersupply on both ends. The AE Base Station does need to plug into the wall also, but the transmitter is your airport card and requires nothing else on its end. Re: Want to play music from my MBP through my stereo wirelessly - Apple AirTunes my only option? - Jerry® - 08-25-2006 I just realized that I can use my Griffin RoadTrip - it came with a USB cable adaptor so that you can use th FM transmitter part with a home stereo. The USB splits into two cables - one that powers the transmitter and the other is a 3.5" mini stereo plug. So I just plugged that into the headphone/sound out on my MacBook Pro and Voila! Granted - it's not the greatest quality - but it will do for now. |
