Yosemite: Preview 8.0 PDF woes - Uncle Wig - 01-09-2015
Since upgrading to Yosemite, Preview has become pretty much unusable for doing basic PDF viewing and marking up. (It worked beautifully for this in 10.6.8). It's spinning beachball misery.
This seems to be a very common issue based on what I see on the Apple support forums, and hopefully Apple will fix this in an update. In the meantime, one solution seems to be using Preview 7 from Mavericks. Unfortunately I never had Mavericks installed so I have no backup from which to pull that app.
Can anyone here hook me up with Preview version 7 that I can try?

My system runs Yosemite and I do more than basic PDF viewing and markup without any problems.

Interesting... could you show us a few of the issues that were solved so that AA can believe that you are not a microsoft/google sleeper agent?

after doing some looking around i suspect you either have a problematic pdf (perhaps new preview is more fragile) or a bad pref file

Using Preview 8 to look at JPGs, even large ones, is fine. The PDFs I'm having problems with are about 18 MB (textbook page proofs), and Preview has a hard time with them. It is slow and jerky scrolling to the next page, I get spinning beach balls, etc. I Googled this and saw a number of posts about it on the Apple support forums, and a lot of "me too" followups. One poster suggested using Preview 7, and that's working for me. Maybe it's a function of my older Mac Pro 3,1? I had no problem with these big PDFs whatsoever in Preview when I had 10.6.8.
