The MacBook firmware update totally meets my expectations. - JJ - 08-24-2006

My MacBook now rests on my lap quite nicely without burning me.

I hope they fix the speaker volume in their next firmware update.

Geez, I need to do that one evening, instead of sitting there playing Luxor like some addict. 8-)

Which brings up a question I was going to ask last night after seeing kiva get torn a new one after an innocent "How do I know if I need this?" question in a similar thread.

I gave kiva the benefit of the doubt and just figured he had a MacBook and was just wondering if there are particular MacBooks to which the firmware update would apply or if they apply to all. The old 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality. Sometimes fixes are predicated on info like pertains only to MacBooks with serial # XX_____ through XX___.

More importantly, how does one even hear about these firmware updates? If I didn't happen to see that post and if we're not having any problems with our MacBook, how are we supposed to know that a firmware update even exists? We've received no email from Apple akin to a TSB. Should we have or are we supposed to wait until a problem arises that would have been addressed with a firmware update?

Usually Apple firmware updates won't run on machines they aren't meant for.

My speakers seem louder after update. - slbett - 08-24-2006

Others have noticed same thing. Not earth shattering but louder. Check yours.

Do you actually not know about Software Update??

SOFTWARE UPDATE

Did you hit your head, or is this natural?

You two must be a real hit at parties.

Well, I rarely if ever use the MacBook, and I'm guessing I wouldn't have seen it in my Quicksilver's Software Update. But as the father of a daughter who does use the MacBook, I am curious. If I don't hear of problems, I figure there are none.

And by the way, from Apple's site:

I hadn't installed the firmware update yet, so I took a look in Software Update last night. The firmware update did not appear in Software Update for me, I checked very carefully. And it never did, until after I installed an OS update and a couple of other updates. Then on my next check it appeared. Strange.
