[rant] I hate my cable modem, I think. - deckeda - 03-05-2015

Internet connection gone and now back.

Along the way, I rebooted everything, unplugged/replugged the cable connection, even, to get a new IP from Comcast. At one point only a computer connected directly to the modem could get online. Initially, the Apple router reported nothing amiss even though it wasn't online (AirPort Utility in all flavors is a bit stupid sometimes, as the front panel green/amber light can be in my experience.)

So I swap in my old, backup router. It never even saw the modem. Remember, I'm rebooting things in sequence still, waiting for diagnostics to finish etc. Comcast supposedly no longer locks in connected MAC addresses downstream but you never know for sure.

I swapped Ethernet cables with no luck. I was about to reconfirm with just a laptop again but swapped back in the Airport Extreme and initially the same issue, then disconnected the Ethernet and put it back in and suddenly BAM connected. I promise you it was connect well previously.

What I learned is that whether or not the modem *thinks* the Ethernet connection to the router is good isn't based on reality and this is shown both by its front panel status light and behavior. Maddening. I can't troubleshoot non-repeatable, intermittent failures.

Before I go farking with my modem, routers I check see if all the other Comcast and xfinitywifi modem routers in the neighborhood have disappeared in my wifi network found list. 99/100 times they are gone too.

Hate the game, don't hate the playa!

Weird it only fails with the routers, not the directly connected computers. Swapping Ethernet was a good idea. Didn't know Comcast stopped locking MAC addresses (I still reboot my modem when swapping devices, old habits, eh?). Hope you figure out a permanent solution.

My Time Worthless system used to flake out for no particular reason.

Then I replaced their DNS with Google's and 'poof'.. no more problems. It's like they hired poorly trained monkeys instead of networking professionals to administer their systems....

re: xfinitywifi -- the one near me was seen. Probably should have just connected to it and called it a day, heh.

re: "Didn't know Comcast stopped locking MAC addresses" Don't quote me on that. I think what I should have said is that you can now connect a new modem without having to call them up and let them know. But the modem probably still has to "lock" onto whatever's plugged into its Ethernet port. Or not ... don't ask me!

re: new modem --- yeah idk, maybe

re: DNS --- I didn't try it today but have typed in IP addresses I know without success previously. Comcast's DNS here seems fine.

Comcast has people hired whose sole job is to shut off your access at random to save bandwidth and mess with your mind.

Try to load http://192.168.100.1 If it doesn't load and the lights on your modem seem fine, then restart your router. If you still can't load 192.168.100.1, restart your modem.

Also, check the modem status & logs. If there's no errors and everything is ok, then you know the modem isn't the problem.

Thanks
