Yahoo has killed their "Directory" - freeradical - 03-05-2015

It used to be what Yahoo was known for. Human reviewed websites.

Now dir.yahoo.com redirects to business.yahoo.com, which completely blows monkey chunks.

I now have no reason to ever visit their site.

wow!

I still remember WAY back before www advertising some CNBC type show had a guy on talking about the future of the internet and how a company like yahoo might generate money. He put up the Yahoo directory page and said, 'Now imagine advertising in this space over here and perhaps over here too.'

I immediately 'got it' and knew that it wouldn't be long before advertising was EVERYWHERE on the web.

I haven't used the directory in a very long time, but it makes me a little sad to know that it's gone now. It was one of the first landmarks of the internet age.

Thought the Directory was gone a long time ago. It was the original search engine listing, wasn't it? (Apart from closed networks like CompuServe/AOL.)

No, there was a 'flavor of the month' searches for a while - so easy to forget now. Alta Vista and Excite were older - I'm sure there were others that didn't last long enough to remember.
