Applying for Grants.. how tacky is applying for several to fund the same thing? - Paul F. - 03-25-2015 So... the school I work for is looking for funds for some technology projects, and since I'm the technology guy for the school (K-8), I'm part of the committee that's looking for funding sources. We're picking through various grant opportunities and wondering... Once we clarify our goals down to a discrete "project" to apply for a grant to fund, how tacky is it to apply for several grants to fund the same project? Mainly to save the 4, 6, 8 or year-long wait before the next grant deadline comes along if we are turned down for the first one. Yes, we're new to being the people to take the lead on grant-writing... the person that did that a few years ago retired! Re: Applying for Grants.. how tacky is applying for several to fund the same thing? - sekker - 03-25-2015 This is complex. As someone who does this for a living, I break up projects into findable units. I write grants for each unit, then use money to fill in what doesn't get funded. Most of the time, I have to submit 2-3 or more grants per unit as most grants are not funded the first time these days. Re: Applying for Grants.. how tacky is applying for several to fund the same thing? - neophyte - 03-25-2015 Make sure the application/instruction sheet does not require you to state that you are NOT applying to any other granting agency to fund essentially the same project. Some agencies have that restriction. Re: Applying for Grants.. how tacky is applying for several to fund the same thing? - Paul F. - 03-25-2015 Many thanks! We are beginning to appreciate the complexity :-) We're very early in our planning so far... we're still outlining exactly what we want to fund using grants (vs other sources), and identifying grants that don't specifically rule us out (only available to schools near a particular company's home base, etc). I'm OK with it being a multi-year process... as long as we go into it knowing that it will be! sekker wrote: Re: Applying for Grants.. how tacky is applying for several to fund the same thing? - Paul F. - 03-25-2015 Good tip! Thank you. neophyte wrote: Re: Applying for Grants.. how tacky is applying for several to fund the same thing? - Acer - 03-25-2015 We've had grantors allow us to move excess monies into other parts of the project after we asked nicely, but that's going to depend on the grantor. If you have a friendly contact in the grantor, you might be able to ask "Hypothetically speaking, of course" to test the waters for their likely response to changing how you spend the funds. In the absence of any such restrictions... swing for the fences! You might not receive any of them. As a former board member of a non-profit, yes, apply, apply, apply for all the grants you can. You might not receive any of them. All of the above. It's no more tacky than applying to several colleges for acceptance, observing neo's advice. You put *all* the oars in the water. Tacky would be *accepting* more than one grant for the same project, not to mention potentially being ILLEGAL. Though it certainly *is* possible to legally accept multiple grants for separate portions of a single project. Just observer the grantor's stipulations. Totally cool, dude. == |
