Getting a replacement battery for Macbook Pro 15 - lipskidder - 03-29-2015 So I am seeing a few batteries for my 15" MBP A1175. This is for a MBP that is on it's last legs so I thought my kids can make use of it. Last battery inflated on us so I am not even sure if it will still take a battery so I figured $20 is a safe gamble. I see a 6 cell and a 9 cell online. Is there a real difference for what I need? They are priced the same so i guess I am asking if the different cells will matter to what I hook it up to? Is it just better use of power to have a 9 cell? Or is there really just one kind and some of these sellers are just typing what they are told it is and have no clue? Re: Getting a replacement battery for Macbook Pro 15 - N-OS X-tasy! - 03-29-2015 Don't pinch pennies on MBP batteries - this is one area where you get what you pay for. I recommend replacing with either a genuine Apple battery or the third-party battery OWC sells. Re: Getting a replacement battery for Macbook Pro 15 - Onamuji - 03-29-2015 For Macs that old, replacement batteries are a crapshoot. Beware that even "new" batteries have likely been sitting on a shelf for a few years. Re: Getting a replacement battery for Macbook Pro 15 - lipskidder - 03-29-2015 Got it in 2007. Although I would like to keep this going forever, I know due to it's age it can only use so much software that I use now. The last battery I had was a 3rd party from LA Computing I believe. By no means do I want want to only last a couple of months but cost is also a factor. Right now $20 vs $90 is a big difference for me. If it were my personal machine I would go straight Apple all the way (or 3rd party in this case since Apple no longer carries these). So is there any major difference in the cells? Thanks. Re: Getting a replacement battery for Macbook Pro 15 - Onamuji - 03-29-2015 From a quick survey via Google... 6 cells> 5200-5800mAh 9 cells > 5200-5800mAh So, they're using more cells, but cheaper and smaller cells in the 9-cell version rather than using more cells to provide more power which would be the way that most people would expect them to go. Given that half the cells are probably fated to die early in both models, 9 cells might give you better odds for the battery lasting awhile. But cheaper and smaller cells with more connections makes for more heat and less life in the cells so the 9-cell version might have a shorter life than the 6 cell version. Like I said: Crapshoot. Re: Getting a replacement battery for Macbook Pro 15 - lipskidder - 03-29-2015 The numbers look the same. Did you mean to post it like that? Thanks. Re: Getting a replacement battery for Macbook Pro 15 - MikeF - 03-29-2015 Just keep it plugged in all the time and forgo the battery? Re: Getting a replacement battery for Macbook Pro 15 - lipskidder - 03-29-2015 Isn't the open battery compartment a danger risk for anything? You know I never tried it with the plug only. Will that work? lol |
