Another hike at the river (BW - 9 pix) - hal - 03-29-2015
It was a nice warm sunny Saturday and the river area was packed with people. Met some nice folks that were like professional bird watchers (if there was such a thing) and they told me where there was a barn owl nest and two hawk nests. I'm gonna see if I can find them next time I'm out. But in the mean time, here are the most recent good shots...
A woodpecker - I little disappointed in this - this guy posed in several nice places, but wouldn't sit still and I only got a decent shot - was hoping for an amazing one...
A Waxwing - a springtime visitor - don't see these around often. He landed on a branch right above me, then took off...
I think this is a Lesser Yellow Legs (DP has ID'd it several times - see if I get it right)
An early season turtle party
This was a late visit this time - the sun was long set by the time I left. When I'm here this late, I sometimes find the Cormorant's night time perch - all of the area's Cormorants hang out together for the night, not always in the same tree. There were about 10 in this one, but I've seen as many as 25 in a large tree...
This is why I LOVE my SX50. These shots are in a very dark place - near the base of a 60' cliff that is covered in dark foliage. Sunlight has to filter though a forest and was close to setting at this point. It's damned dark down there. AND it's on the other side of the river - a LONG shot. I got this one at full zoom, hand held, 1/20sec, 150-200ISO (I try really hard to keep the graininess down - high ISO doesn't make for pretty pictures on this thing). Took about 10 using a 2 sec timer and got these two really nice shots (neither has been cropped)
A far shot of a Blue Heron in the last little bit of light
Extreme low light again - this is how the camera saw it, I didn't punch the saturation or anything [edit] this one was taken on full auto, so no doubt, the ISO was set very high. All other shots are done on shutter speed priority - I set the speed and the camera does the rest to make it work.

I'm impressed with the long, hand-held results in fading light. I assume you can credit the Image Stabilization as well as your steady hand.
Have you looked into the SX60 at all? I was going to go for one this spring, until I saw negative reviews compared to the SX50. Now I'm not sure. Next month we should be able to get out on our river (temps still 30s and 40s).

Thanks all. Yes, the sharp images are due to my practiced steady hand and the image stabilization in equal parts. Before the SX40, IS wasn't good enough for me to even try these shots (and they were too far away anyway). RE the SX60 - the price is too high. I need for it to get to the $350 range for it make sense for me. I saw the negative reviews too, but I only care about sample photos and my go-to is Steve's Digicams. LONG rambling reviews and at the end, a long series of sample images and gratefully, they always use the same subject for their zoom tests. And I gotta say, those samples look great! Looks like a Nuttall's Woodpecker and a Cedar Waxwing. I've had plenty Waxwings in my yard for the last three weeks eating small figs from a rubber tree.

Oh hell, I lied. I just checked the settings - the egret shots were at 1/50 & 1/60, ISO 160. I must have been thinking of another one...

ahs has the right of it-a Nuttall's (Picoides nuttallii).
I'm jealous; it's 40ยบ with snow showers here...
I think that's one of the two best things about the SX's. The image stabilization and the DIGIC 5 processor. The 60 has the Digic 6.

Those images look sharp. But I keep coming back to this head-to-head comparison (of 8 superzooms), where the SX60 at maximum zoom came in worse than not only the SX50, but several of the others as well:
