Going all in with Photos.app - pinkoos - 04-23-2015

Decided to jump in head first with the new Photos app and iCloud Photo Library.

My Photo library is about 50 to 60GB (almost 19,000 pictures).

So, the 99 cent 20GB plan is too small, but the $4 200 GB plan is overkill. Had to opt for this plan if I wanted all my photos up in space.

Started the upload last night. It totally saturates your bandwidth, so you need to pause it if you actually have to get things done online. My plan is to let it run each night while the family is sleeping and pause it in the morning before I leave for work.

For the first night (last night), it uploaded about 5,500 pictures. So, I imagine this will take several nights to complete.

But, it will be nice to have all photos accessible from any device at any time with edits/deletes also being reflected universally.

However, I wish there was a way for this to work with my entire family and not just my iCloud account (ie, Family Sharing). That is what I'm going to look into now.

You back all of this up locally too, right?

Jeff

Yup, nightly local backup via Carbon Copy Cloner.

That is a lot of pics.
Just wondering, all you people with giant photo libraries, do you still print some out?

Photos is good---Remember, if you use your iPhoto or Aperture Library in photos, it cannot be opened in the old program.

Photos and iCloud Photo Library is great---you get all your photos accessible on iOS devices, but they only take up space dynamically on the device. Photos are also available at iCloud.com

My (digital) photo library goes back to probably 2001 or so.

I haven't printed out a pic for myself in years.

Had to print one out for my son for a school thing maybe last year or the year before.

I did my entire library, over 100 gig. Took about 3 days, but now I can call up any pic on iPhone, iPad or whatever. Doesn't take up too much room on my iOS devices as it only has thumbnails there, until you click on a pic. So far I like it. Yes I know it's not a professional program.

Yes, even though my upload is not complete, I can access whatever was uploaded overnight on my iPhone or at iCloud.com. It is very cool, especially to scroll back to pictures from long time ago during some downtime at work which I normally wouldn't do if I'm sitting at my Mac at home trying to get something done.

Apple's pricing is not competitive with other providers but, then again, the experience is not as unified and fluid with other providers as it is (finally) with Apple.

I do use other online photo sites (Smugmug, Flickr, Picturelife) but, other than Smugmug, these were purely for redundancy and backup.

Just hoping to figure out a way for my family to have access to my entire iCloud Photo Library without having to do some awkward workaround.

If I had a PC in the mix, I'd use a browser and iCloud.com to see my photos? Is this finally a functional replacement for what one could do for Photo Gallery and iPhoto on 10.6.8?

Yes, I'm on a PC at work right now and can just go to iCloud.com and access whatever has been uploaded so far.
