iPhones and LTE/4G - graylocks - 05-05-2015

i have an iPhone 5s and my son has an iPhone 5. standing in the same spot my ATT indicator shows LTE and his shows 4G (which annoys him to no end). why do they not get the same kind of cell access? he claims on 4G his videos are choppy. is the speed difference that significant.

Does he have LTE switched on?

Edit: I also just read that ATT has to provision the phone for LTE. Maybe call and confirm that they know he has a 5 and he is not getting LTE.

Try resetting the phone?

it does receive LTE just not all the time. in his perfect world it should always get LTE. i'm not so sure cell towers work that way but you would think that two phones in the same spot would get the same signal.

he did just restart and now it shows LTE. he runs his battery down a lot? maybe he should restart overtime it dies on a drained battery?

I have a 5S and when I'm on the train or in the car (moving from location to location) the iPhone goes from LTE to 3G to 1x (Argh!) depending on deadspots. It sometimes takes a while to revert back to LTE even when I know it's available. Happens when I come out of a tunnel sometimes. It will revert back on it's own. Or I can reset it if I'm impatient. Like when I need to load a page immediately and it's 3G.

My iPhone 6 (ATT) shipped with a flakey sim card.
ATT replaced it (free) and I haven't had a problem since.

The 5 and 5s are different phones, maybe one has a better LTE antenna and/or radio?
