Cast Iron Railing - worth anything on the used market? - clay - 05-06-2015
Just removed a 9 foot long (with an extra 1 foot long "L" on one end) by 3 foot tall cast iron railing from the top of a stair landing from our house (replaced with half-wall of wood and drywall--more safe for little kids who like to get themselves stuck between the railings). Solid piece, very heavy. Seems like there should be more value in it than just scrap. Am I correct?
Assume its in good shape, what should I ask for it if I post on our local craigslist?

truly cast iron may have value to people looking for antique building components. Most railing these days is just steel tubing and strip.

hmmm...how would I check whether it's truly cast iron or just steel tubing/strip? If it matters, the house was built in the late 70s and was likely put in at that time.

Erm... I forgot 'wrought iron', which is more malleable than cast iron. But still more fibrous than steel.
1970's ? It's steel unless the builder was a serious artiste....
Scrap it.

If it is truly cast iron it would likely be an antique.

yeah, I doubt it's actually cast iron. but I don't know enough about these ferrous metals to know exactly what to call it. "heavy-duty steel railing"?

If you put it on craigslist, list it as rot iron. :-)

It is worth whatever someone would pay for it. Craigslist might get you something if someone needs that exact size.

The distance between the rails may disqualify it for some people based on modern building codes.
