[trees] Cherry, oh, Cherry: I think that I killed it - mrbigstuff - 05-08-2015

Planted last fall (October? November?). Nice tall, straight fruiting semi-dwarf. Now, brittle and lifeless. Argh....!

Chop it back mercilessly and hope for something next year? Or, cut losses and just plant another?

I was going to buy a pollenator for this tree anyhow, so maybe I will do that and just hope that this one makes a return.

Opinions?

Sorry but it's probably gone.

If there is no green just under the skin of the last newest growth on (a) branch(es) towards the bottom of the tree, that's a year or two of recovery/regrowth if the root system does do something and send up shoots or gets some activity somewhere up the trunk. There's a chance just the root stock or root system will send up a shoot and unless you are good at grafting and have stock to graft you may as well start over.

We have quite a few plants that we thought didn't make it thru the Winter but we have resisted digging them up. But, lo and behold, a few have little bits of new growth showing up! Maybe just wait a bit longer before you decide.

If you like your cherry tree you can keep your cherry tree.

Not sure where you live and/or climate. If you're in the Northeast and experienced the brutal winter we had here. I would guess that tree is dead/dying. If you live in a warm temperate climate you might be able to save it with lots of water and sun and mulch. It's hard enough for a healthy potted newly planted tree to survive the winter here. Do you think it'll have any chance NEXT WINTER in it's dying state?

Most of the garden nurseries I buy trees and shrubs from mention a 1 year warranty. Maybe check into that? If it was bought at HomeDepot/Lowes/etc.. notch it up as a loss.

We've lost a bunch of trees in our community after the super hard winter. Small trees got stripped of their bark by starving animals, larger trees were battered by high winds and heavy snow and ice loads.

Depending on where you live, give it some time. We have trees that show no sign of life yet but that will leaf out in a few weeks.

We had such a mild winter, warm with little snow cover, so we lost some shrubs do to too much sun causing too many freeze and thaw cycles.
