F-U to Update on New (almost) Mac in the house. - CW2V - 07-14-2015 previous Apple was quick to reply. Computer was first purchased on Best Buy was/is bullshitting. Next round is trip back to store with proof. But I do want to keep the computer, but not with the failing drive and the lack of warranty. And I don't want the "Geek Squad" near it again. Thanks for all the replies. Tomorrow is earliest I can make my case against Best Buy. CW2V Re: F-U to Update on New (almost) Mac in the house. - C(-)ris - 07-14-2015 Case for what? Your choice is to return it or keep it. Re: F-U to Update on New (almost) Mac in the house. - carl - 07-14-2015 I'm curious to see how Best Buy responds Re: F-U to Update on New (almost) Mac in the house. - CW2V - 07-14-2015 C(-)ris wrote: Fraud. They represented it as an "open box return", that means it had to be returned with 45 days of new purchase. They said any open box item return stays on the closeout for a few months... Not almost 3 years. (Plus it has been running for 3700 hrs, not in sleep mode, so it wasn't sitting on a shelf) They showed me a receipt (supposedly for that computer) with the purchase date of Jan 2014 on it. They got some 'splaining to do. " I'm curious to see how Best Buy responds " Yes. But I'm betting it was just cause they are uniformed, not trying to be malicious. And you would have to prove that was there intent. Return it or keep it as is. I suppose you could ask for a further discount -- but don't expect one. I'd return it. Headache waiting to happen. Then they can wash, rinse, and repeat by showing the next rube a receipt from 7-12-2105. And that was just based on the year/week encoded in the serial number. I wonder if Apple really has proof that it was sold to an end user on 8/27, or if that's when Apple sold it to Best Buy. In any case it was heavily used, not a brand new product that was just used during a short return period and was sitting idle for close to 3 years. You always referred to it as an "Open Box", did they really have the original box for it with a matching serial number on the sticker. I was assuming that BB was using the term very loosely and there was no box (and maybe it really was some sort of used trade-in that they never sold originally). What if BB offers to take $100 more off the price? And keep in mind that it will probably need a new battery soon, more than 50% life gone, but maybe that's inaccurate and re-calibrating it will show better numbers. EDIT: In looking at it again, it looks like it was still charging, so the true capacity won't really be known until the charging is complete, and is probably much better than 43%. ![]() Re: F-U to Update on New (almost) Mac in the house. - CW2V - 07-14-2015 It was advertised as an open box return, missing power cord and cables / manual. There was no box. The sales rep. explicitly told me that it was a return under their 45 day policy, and that it could not have sat on their open-box close-out shelf for more than a few months. The kicker is that they showed a reciept for Jan 2015 to prove that it was bought then, and then returned within 45 days. I asked for proof since it looked so "used." I was told the Apple warranty was still valid since it was purchased in Jan 2015. They also tried to sell me "Geek Squad" coverage which at the time seemed odd after they said it was covered by Apple. At no point was it advertised as USED for over two years, more closer to THREE. This is a mixture of incompetence and fraud. They knew it wasn't an "new open-box return". Maybe the floor rep wasn't fully aware (They all looked to be in their early twenties), but whomever they talked to in the back to reduce the price from 799 to 499 knew. It was way to quick, and too steep for the slight dent in the case. It stinks. CW2V Re: F-U to Update on New (almost) Mac in the house. - RAMd®d - 07-14-2015 Yeah, sorry, gotta agree with this. Likewise. Fraud requires intent, and that's not easy to prove. Your circumstances could easily be the result of lousy bookkeeping/inventorying. Knowing it's fraud is one thing, proving in is another, and you don't even know that. Then they can wash, rinse, and repeat by showing the next rube a receipt from 7-12-2105. Again, this *supposes* that this was a deliberate action that they are likely to repeat. That could be the case, but is it? In any case it was heavily used, not a brand new product that was just used during a short return period and was sitting idle for close to 3 years. Agreed. This is not "open box" in any reasonable sense of the word. I didn't know that BB had a specific definition, but it makes sense to do so. What if BB offers to take $100 more off the price? That would allow him to keep the computer and get the HD fixed on his own. And keep in mind that it will probably need a new battery soon, more than 50% life gone, but maybe that's inaccurate and re-calibrating it will show better numbers. I'd just wash my hands of this. I was of the opinion, having no actual knowledge, that the recommended monthly calibration was about getting your remaining time per charge (as shown in the menu bar) to be more accurate as the battery ages. Does it affect the accuracy of displayed mAhs? Or any other recorded data shown in coconutBattery? Re: F-U to Update on New (almost) Mac in the house. - GGD - 07-14-2015 So it didn't come with an AC Adapter either. After you return it maybe check to see what they try selling it for and how they list it's condition. I think you're right that they'll say it was sold on July 12, 2015 and returned on July 15th. I'd be tempted to take off the bottom cover and tape a little note in there for the next victim to find, maybe with a URL to this thread. I did that once with Fry's when I was returning items as defective and fully expected them to put it back on the shelf. |
