Laser Printer problem - vicrock - 07-14-2015

Last resort - anyone here have any insight about why and how to fix a Dell color laser 1660w that keeps giving an error message of paper jam - when there is no paper jam, and never was.

Spoke to Dell and they say to "repair" it would be more than a new printer - this one is about 16 months old with light home use.

I've opened it up, cleaned, unplugged, re-plugged and am at my wits end.

When I plug it in, it comes up "ready to print" - when you send a job, it tries to pull a sheet of paper about an inch and then gives the "paper jam" message.

Any insight would be appreciated before I take it to Goodwill!

A Single Sheet of Paper Killed My Printer, October 27, 2014

As others have said, one paper jam will kill this printer...And by kill I mean the Techs at Staples will look in it and say, "Yep...It's dead. Sorry, but there's nothing that can be done about it."

In 2014, how can a simple paper jam render a printer "useless"? This is obviously a major design flaw. It worked fine for 6 months with decent print quality. Then one day it had a paper misfeed and something happened "in the fusing unit" that destroyed the printer.

There's a reason why this color LED printer is selling everywhere for less than $100...You roll the dice when you buy one.

Mine didn't even misfeed!

Maybe a roller that needs to be cleaned or replaced?

The nice Dell offshore tech support people seemed to think it was a sensor - and that replacing it would cost more than a new printer - and to add insult to injury - they don't stock that part - so even if one was inclined to fix it, you can't.

What really irks me is that I just recently bought a multi pack of toner cartridges for the now boat anchor! Sad

Lexmark makes the worst, cheapest, most fragile, expensive and rigged to self-destruct f-ing printers with the most f-ed up drivers in the whole of human history and all civilization. They strive to make your life miserable.

So, of course, Dell badges the worst of their cr@p and sells it to people who cant bother to do a Google search before blowing their cash on garbage.

Beneficent aliens turn and wretch at the thought of visiting this world because of Lexmark.

To be fair, their Optra models are work horses. Just as good as the older HP printers.

Fixed that for you.

I'm sure that the unexpected useful lifespan of some of the Optras was a nasty surprise for them. Which is why they killed that line.

Vic,

As ridiculous as it may sound, the source of the problem could be just a little bit of schmutz. I had a similar issue with our office's HP Laserjet P2035. I checked everywhere multiple times and couldn't find the source of the jam.

Just as I was about to price out a replacement, I decided to give it another looksie with a brighter flashlight. And, there, in the innards of the printer above part of the paper cassette, was the teeniest piece of paper. Small enough to be easily missed but apparently just large enough to cause the printer to go kablooey. I dampened the head of a long q-tip and used it to brush off the scrap. Apparently, that did the job.

The printer was back to normal working order again.

Very annoying.
