[Things that are great] Carbon Copy Cloner - Black - 07-15-2015
As you may be sick of hearing about, I swapped in a Samsung 500 GB SSD for my former boot SSD (Kingston 240 GB). When I fired up Carbon Copy Cloner just now I got this:
It basically suspended all my backup tasks, and I need to go in one by one and either "activate" or "leave suspended." I was anticipating I would have to create a new task to back up the new SSD but it allowed me to use the old SSD's backup task and just change the source drive... and then the backup only copied the files that had changed since last backup (i.e. my mail files.)
I can't think of a better way any of this could be handled--had actually anticipated writing to CCC folks and asking if there was a way I could get my new drive to just be treated like the old drive. Clearly tons of work went into improving CCC 4.

I love Carbon Copy Cloner. I want something that easy, with that GUI on Linux. Yeah, I really do need to learn how to properly use rysnc or other similar tools, but I'd pay $50 for the same solution on Linux. Maybe even $100. I have at least four systems that could make use of such a tool.

I love Carbon Copy Cloner. I want something that easy, with that GUI on Windows. Unfortunately I HAVE to use a windows machine at work. And making a bootable clone is an amazing hassle.

Ghost-- what a horrible name for something to trust your data to.... evokes a dead hard drive....
I used to pass one of those day care centers in a mall called "Angeltown" or something similar with Angel in the name..... like, what your child becomes when they go to heaven...... wrong connotation IMO but maybe I'm not the target audience...

Aw, thanks for the kind words! To Black's original point - we actually spent a lot of time discussing how we thought folks would expect/want CCC to handle it - and even though it took some extra time to implement - decided it was the way to go! Ditto with the CCC 3.5 -> 4.0 migration tool. It was a huge undertaking but the team insisted that it had to be done.

You guys make consistently great decisions and it's rare to find software with this level of empathy for the user.
I hated in older versions when a minor change to my scheme caused me to have to trash all my backup tasks and start fresh.

Symantec stuff still scares me. I've tried Acronis. Never could get it to work. The whole "make a bootable" clone for windows seem to be some arcane process that no one seems to get right. At least not so that it's as easy as something like CCC. And then there's the ability to make a bootable clone AND do smart updates to ONLY replace data that's changed.
I just ordered a larger SSD for my Dell at work and my IT guy bought something called EZGig. I set it to run last night before I left. The instructions say after it runs, I should just be able to swap drives and continue on. We'll see about that this AM.
