He tied a double slipped overhand knot instead of a double slipped square knot.
You can tell by the fact that the resulting loops ended up vertically oriented instead of transversely.

Personally, if I'm in a high speed sneaker accident, I want those puppies to fly off my feet, NOT break off at the ankles because they were tied too tight.
