Quick AppleCare Question - steveroberts - 08-06-2015
Friends,
Got a 2014 MacBook Air nearing the end of factory warranty, and I'd like to add AppleCare. I found a decent deal on AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook Air/Macbook MB587LL/A, which appears to pre-date my MacBook.
So, will an older AppleCare work with a newer MacBook?

Plan is for MacBook Air/Macbook.
Doesn't matter how old it is, I don't see why it would not work. I did this once, I think I had a plan from an iBook (PPC) that I applied to a MacBook (intel). It worked. You can call Apple to make 100% sure, but I am already pretty sure it should work.
Back then the older apple care plans were in fact even better as they covered the wear and tear on battery, something that was removed from newer plans.

Just be sure your deal is a genuine retail AppleCare plan, not just a registration code. Apple is now denying coverage for AC plans that were being illicitly resold by vendors who were only authorized to sell the plans bundled with machines.

News to me! When did that happen? Two days ago AppleCare authorized me to take in my 2011 MBP 15" for a battery replacement. I registered my AppleCare a couple of years ago and don't have any idea where the box, etc. is to check the warranty terms.
I also have an old AppleCare for PowerBook boxed that I will have to use one day. It is a Canadian version in French that I bought on eBay long before the MacBook line came out.

I've purchased AC from LA Computer before - they are legit. I even went to their B/M location in Anaheim to make the purchase.

Apple has always told me the battery is not covered unless it is defective, losing charge over time is not covered. To be fair, they said the same thing about my summer 2000 iBook and wouldn't even replace one key that stopped working on the keyboard (it wasn't broken, still physically attached, just didn't work, but a cleaning declogged it). I've had trouble with Apple actually covering my systems so I stopped buying the warranty, it was so hit and miss. Yes, we will replace the disc drive, modem, Ethernet port, but no not a keyboard or other things. It's weird because my systems are generally in good shape physically. They aren't abused.
Anywho, if your battery was defective, they'll replace. I had a power charger replaced for the same reason, it caught fire, but my dead battery after 2.5 years, nope. It was within spec.
