Anyone here own a Benchmade knife? - john dough - 08-06-2015

I am going camping more and more and wanted to get a knife for these trips. I talked with a friend who camps often and said if I was looking for a knife to last my lifetime, get a Benchmade. I ordered one from thir store and used this this code [ NRALOD2015 ] to save 30% off my order (it is not a one-time use, if anyone was interested). I put together a custom Barrage knife for under $150 (the non-custom ones go for $200+) and it should be here next week. Yeah, I could get a knife for $10 or so, but I wanted something GREAT and was built in the US.

I love mine. There are other great ones out there - can't remember back when I did the research - but I thought they were a great value for the quality..

I'm sure they are fabulous, but it would be real tough for me to justify spending that much on a camping knife. I own a nice folding Schrade that I bought in the 70s that has held up quite well over the years, as tight and sharp as ever. 'Course, I'm sure I thought I was crazy at the time spending 20 bucks on a knife. Gerber makes some nice knives, I own a few of those, too.

I'm going backpacking in about 10 minutes - bringing the only knife I would ever need...

I suppose that if I was hunting, fishing or having a fire, maybe I'd need something more substantial, but I'm not...

I own one, quality is on par with a custom knife that is in my collection.

I have a "Swiss" army knife that I got from REI about 1979 that I still use for backpacking. I toss in my Leatherman and a small hatchet when car camping.

I have an old Boyscout knife that I bought at a yard sale when I was about 7. Though I have many other knives now, that is still the best and sharpest of the bunch.

Benchmade... perhaps the best reason to take a trip to Oregon.

Incredible knives, but I'd also say overkill for camping; mostly from the standpoint of asking myself if I'd be upset if it were lost, broken, or otherwise damaged compared to a lesser cost knife that was suitable and available. We've got a lot of knives in our family collection, including Benchmades, but for camping (if I could actually go), to stick w/ the made in USA parameter, a darn near indestructible Buck would feel like a safer choice,

Good size

Smaller size

There are other domestically produced affordable knives that are suitable for camping... don't get me wrong, Benchmade's are my absolute favorite, and I'm all for buying 'em, I just wouldn't take 'em on a rugged camping trip. Now if camping is really just staying in a 4 star lodge in or near a National Park, then maybe a Benchmade is appropriate.
