New iMac 2012 continued multiple questions - bedouin - 08-08-2015

Ok, so the email import did not work well at all (previous post from last night).

Think I will go back to copying the mail folder from the old iMac and then put it on the new iMac and then delete all the other accounts that I don't want.

Things that have bugged me about past migrations and cloning of my HDD from one Mac to another are over the years (going back to 2006).

In my email accounts before (3 computers ago) I could type a few letters of a person's name and their email address would pop up. Very handy at work. Now I have to go find the names and put them in.

This was after copying over my contacts..... so I must have missed something.

Right now I am really working with 3 iMacs;

iMac one is an old white 24" 2.16ghz that I have been using for work (just put it up for sale on craigslist). The main thing I need from that computer is all sent and received emails. The rest I can copy over manually.

Thoses emails are going onto the 2009 iMac (iMac two) that I will be taking to the office on Monday to replace the old white iMac.

iMac three is the 2012 that I just picked up yesterday that is going to be my new home computer to replace iMac two.

I am trying to not migrate all the junk from iMac two onto the iMac three.

iMac two has junk copied over since my days on my first 2006 iMac.

I have googled ways to replace items on iMac three but there so much contradiction and disagreements that it becomes quite confusing.

One of the most important things to have on iMac three is the pop gmail (sent and received) from iMac two. Last night I set up the Apple mail on iMac three and then logged onto the gmail account and email started to download (but stopped after I went to bed and had to hit get mail for it to resume this am). But it does not seem to be importing sent mail unless it does it after all the incoming mail is received.

I would love to hear some ways from you guys here on this forum. Suggested web sites, etc..

It is amazing how many things are automated and remembered on an old computer vs a brand new one that has a fresh os install.

TIA

Matthew

Thinking of using iCloud

Is that a good move or a security nightmare?

The simple way is to clone the internal drives to external drives. Your office mac will then have a complete copy of theCraigslist Mac. Your new Mac will have a complete copy of the old home Mac.

You can copy over what you need as you need it from the external to the internal.

What you are trying to do is make a two-step process into a one-step process:

one step: clean up drive, removing unwanted data and apps and hacks.

another step: Install the desired "stuff" from old Mac to news Mac.

Why are you using POP mail?

IMAP is far and away superior for almost any use-case.

Now might be a good time to transition and get a good start on your new Mac.

...

"Sent" mail, like most of your POP messages, will only reside on the computer that you used to send the messages from. That's how POP works. Messages are not saved on the server or synced with other devices. With the default settings, as soon as a message is received on or sent from your Mac, it is deleted from the server.

(You can mess with POP settings to save your messages in your Inbox even after they are downloaded to your Mac, but this is a kludge that seldom works well in the long run.)

If you want your entire mail archive on the new Mac and you're not "migrating" the entire old user account or then you'll have to export your old mail from your old Mac and import it on the new Mac.

I'm with Onamuji. With IMAP it should pull every email that's on your email providers servers. It has
every time I've nuked and paved and then setup Mail with my Gmail accounts, folders and all.

I have no experience with IMAP but would like to try it. Where can I lean and will it download all my sent emails?

Or should I just copy over the mail.plst and pref files on both iMac two and three?

Now all of a sudden my gmail account stopped downloading emails and it is only at 2011.

I have cloned drives before and I use Carbon Cloner as well as Time Machine to back up both iMac one and iMac two on a daily basis.

I just hate to bring over unwanted hidden items....

Ok, I created a new email account for gmail and set it up as IMAP. Its doing its thing so maybe all my sent mail will show up too.

Doing this on iMac three (new to me 2012 iMac) so I can start using the gmail account.

Beachball is still running in Apple mail waiting for gmail IMAP to download or do whatever it is to do..... Not a good sign.

Getting frustrated I think I have screwed up my messages, contacts and a few other things on the 2012 iMac.

Re: New iMac 2012 continued multiple questions - bedouin - 08-08-2015

I did a force quit and the new gmail account seemed fine. Both sent and received.

Then I decided to go delete the same pop gmail account and somehow deleted both pop and IMAP so starting all over again.

I also enable iCloud and not sure if I should have done that...

Ok so this thread is getting lame from me complaining but I did get my gmail account (both send and receive) by using IMAP.

Then I was able to go ths same thing for my work account also using IMAP.

So emails are now good.

Can someone point me to the right direction to properly set up contacts and messages.

Thanks

Matthew
