Best Large Laptop-Drive Upgrade? - mrlynn - 09-21-2015 Number Two Son Nathan is complaining again about lack of HD space on his 2011 13" MBP. He's got a 340GB drive in it, and doesn't want an external (carries the computer everywhere), and he doesn't want to give up his optical drive for a second HD. I was wondering about one of the large 'hybrid' drives that OWC sells, e.g. one like this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Toshiba/MQ02ABD100H/ which would give him both more space and more speed. Good idea? /Mr Lynn Re: Best Large Laptop-Drive Upgrade? - ka jowct - 09-21-2015 I'd just get a 7200 rpm Hitachi, probably the 750GB. And be careful about monitoring laptop heat after that. Re: Best Large Laptop-Drive Upgrade? - decay - 09-21-2015 I find that opening apps is a bit peppier on a hybrid. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178340 Re: Best Large Laptop-Drive Upgrade? - jdc - 09-21-2015 I'd save a few more $$ and go with a 500 GB SSD. If he has a ton of music -- consider storing it on a flash drive? One of those slim ones that barely stick out. Or and SD card? I'm guessing 500GB would not be enough of a space upgrade; 1TB would be better. /Mr Lynn Re: Best Large Laptop-Drive Upgrade? - Racer X - 09-21-2015 I'd go with the hybrid, or a WD Black 1 gig, or a Hitachi 7200 1 gig. Honestly, anything would be faster than stock. Re: Best Large Laptop-Drive Upgrade? - max - 09-21-2015 mrlynn wrote: Not music so much as photos and videos that he likes to carry around. Yes, spend $400 instead of $70... I would go with something like this 1TB Hitachi 7200 RPM to give him lots room to grow. The stock drive is 5400 RPM so he'll see a performance boost in addition to the additional space. http://www.frys.com/product/7325974 |
