Dead iPhone 5 64GB what would you do? - bedouin - 09-21-2015

My wife and I purchased two iPhone 5's 64gb back in the day along with AppleCare ($1,300). Last year in August there was a battery recall that we had done at our local authorized Apple dealer.

Right after that the warranty expired and my wife's phone started acting up. I was able to do a hard boot and reload the software on but finally it just keeps cycling off and on (Apple logo shows and it flashed and shows again).

I can power down and plug in to the Mac and try to upload the software again but it fails at the very end with an 4005 error.

Our local authorized Apple dealer would not touch it without money and offered the usual $269 for a refurb.

Tried with the Apple Store too and they pretty much said the same thing.

So is there anything I am missing to get this iPhone to work again?

Or is it going to be a nice expensive brick paperweight.

TIA

Matthew

I would force the phone into DFU mode (https://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/DFU_Mode), Restore it to the latest OS and NOT put any backup back onto it (Setup as new phone).

We did try that at the AppleStore and the phone will not go into DFU mode.

The Apple logo keeps flashing off and on.....

I think when the battery was replaced it got damaged...

What would I do? I'd keep trying various avenues with Apple. Hope she's got a working phone in the meantime?

Did you let it cycle on/off until the battery dies? That might clear whatever is corrupted. Worth a shot.

Also you could try recovery mode (not DFU mode)

or a tool similar to this

Just bugs me that it dies after the warranty is out. And apparently based on the serial number is also qulaifies for a new wake sleep botton. This phone must have been a bad batch of products.

Apple tech said the button is working but I said it could be part of the problem.

They think it is a logic board issue.

Gone are the days that Apple products work forever. My Fat Mac is still probably working fine in Saudi Arabia where I left it with a Syrian friend in 1987.

Very odd they didn't fix this at that time, too. I just had this repair done. Call it in to Apple, send you phone in for a recall, and you'll get a new one. I did.

When it was 2?

I have a G4 Mac mini that died after a short life. So they have not been perfect forever.

I would trade it in to gazelle, Best Buy, etc.

I just had my iPhone 5 with bulging battery replaced as part of the power button service campaign - so mine lasted about 26 months.

Just got off the phone with Apple and the tech waived the fees and are seding us a new iPhone 5.

He has never seen an iPhone 5 with both recalls so he is getting it repaired for free!

Glad people still have common sense with it comes to issues like this!
